Obituary; Monday, March 30,1936 Fergus Falls Daily Journal Henry Tomhave was Second White Man to Settle In Fergus Falls - BelovedPioneer of Fergus Falls Passes On In His 91st Year - Took Leading Partin Upbuilding of Community - Funeral Wednesday Henry Tomhave, one of Otter Tail county's most outstanding andearliest pioneers, died Sunday evening at 6:45 at his home, 103 Summitavenue east, at the advanced age of 90 years and six months. He spentan active and useful life, but due to advanced age he has been failingfor some months past. He has been confined to his home sinceChristmas time, but was bedridden only two weeks. Born In Germany - Mr. Tomhave was born in Hanover Germany, Sept. 11,1845, the son of John and Katherine Buenger Tomhave. He was educatedin the public schools of Germany, and as a young man came to Americain 1866. He landed in New York City, where he was compelled to workfor six months in order to get enough money for transportation toMinnesota. When he reached LaCrosse, Wis., he was again unable tocontinue his trip because of lack of funds. There he secured aposition on the railroad. He finally reached Red Wing, where heremained for two years. Came to Fergus Falls in 1869 - In the spring of 1869 Mr. Tomhave,together with Chas. Haarstick and Peter Sims, came to what is nowFergus Falls. They walked the entire distance from Saint Paul. Whenthey arrived, there was only one white man here. He was Ernest Buse,and he had built himself a hut in a hay stack. Buse had a homesteadnear Oppermann lake, north of the city. Mr. Buse tried to induce Mr.Tomhave to take a homestead of what is now the heart of Fergus Falls,but Mr. Tomhave declined because of the many hills and sloos. Hepicked out land in Fergus Falls township. He and his companionsreturned to Red Wing, but came back the same fall, this time bringingan ox team and some other household necessities. Mr. Tomhave helped build the first crude bridge to span the riverhere, and also helped build the first store building, which was on theIverson & Lee site. Settlers began pouring into the country shortlyafter Mr. Tomhave's arrival. There were many Germans as well asScandinavians. All of them suffered hardships that few people oftoday could endure. These early men and women had to depend on theirown resources, and there was no government bureau that would replenishtheir larders or loan them money. During those first years Mr. Tomhave worked hard, and planned for thefuture. He planned so well that in December, 1872, he returned to RedWing to claim his bride. She was Anna Bredehoeft, and the marriagetook place on Dec. 26, 1872. They returned to Otter Tail county thefollowing spring, and from then on they took a prominent part in theupbuilding of the community. They gained many warm friends because oftheir consideration and help to others. Charter Member of Trinity Lutheran Church - Mr. Tomhave was a man ofsterling character. He was the last surviving charter member of theTrinity Lutheran church in this city. He was faithful in attendingchurch services and was also a liberal contributor to the church andits various departments. Mr. Tomhave also took a leading part in other matters. He heldpositions of trust in both the church and the township, and did nothesitate in promoting anything that would be of lasting benefit to hiscommunity. He took a leading part in the organization of the FergusCo-operative Creamery, and was one of the seven incorporators when theassociation was organized on March 16, 1907. He was electedtreasurer, a position he has held continuously for 29 years. He wasre-elected at the last meeting. The Storm of 1873 - The terrible snowstorm of 1873 in which so manypeople lost their lives, was often discussed by Mr. Tomhave. He andhis wife were fortunate enough to be in their hut when the stormbroke. After the storm, Mr. Tomhave assisted in the search forvictims, and it was he who found Mrs. Timms, so badly frozen that herlimbs were amputated. Mrs. Timms was cared for in the Tomhave homefor some time. It will be recalled that Mr. Timms and his son-in-lawfroze to death. Five Children Survive - Deceased is survived by five children. Mrs.Tomhave died August 12, 1933. The children are: John Tomhave ofSandstone, Minn.; Mrs. Anna Bredehoeft of Aurdal; Carl, Claus andHenry L. Tomhave, all of this city. All the children were at hisbedside when the end came. There are also 18 grandchildren and 12great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:30p.m. from the Trinity Lutheran church, Rev. W. Friedrich in charge.
