BISMARCK CITY DIRECTORIES In 1914-15, Jacob was an "auto expert" at Bismarck Motor Co. andresided at 305-8th. In 1916-17 and 1919-20, he was a foreman there andresided first at 700-10th and then at 507-10th, with his wife Emma M.In 1928-29, he was listed as a mechanic at Bismarck Motor Co. and theyresided at 517-10th. The next available directory is for 1932-33 andJacob is not found in it nor in subsequent years. CENSUS 1910 - McIntosh Co., ND (ED #80, sheet 11B), Iowas Township - JacobJ., 24, and Emma, 21. They had been married for two years and had hadone child, not living. 1920 - Bismark, Burleigh, ND - Jacob 34, immigrated 1905, naturalized1913, he and parents born in Russia; Emma 30, born ND, parents born inRussia; Anna 6, Henry 3, Verna 1 mo. 1930 - Bismarck, Burleigh, ND - Jacob 44, auto mechanic, Emma 41, Anna16, Henry 15, Verna 10, Theodore 6, Rhuben 2. NORTH DAKOTA DEATH INDEX There is a death record for Bertha E. Schweigert who was born 1 Feb1910 and died 29 Mar 1910 in Logan County, ND. It is possible thatthis was the first child. FAMILY HISTORY According to Roger Dietterle, Jacob and his family moved from Bismarckto Plevna, MT, where they lived for three years. Then in 1933 theymoved to McLaughlin, SD, where Jacob had Schweigert Chevrolet andImplement Co. HOMESTEAD Copies of Jacob J. Schweigert's Homestead papers were received fromthe National Archives. Jacob filed his homestead application on 9 Sep1907 for 158.07 acres in Hellwig, ND. The accompanying Declaration ofIntention indicates the following: Occupation: Blacksmith Height 5'6", Weight 140 lbs., with blond hair and blue eyes Emigrated on the ship "Friedrich the Large", arriving in New Yorkabout 1 Aug 1905 He initially paid $13.95 as registry fee. His neighbors, Georg Ulrichand Karl Reuther, filed Testimony of Witness papers in May 1910.Jacob's own testimony at that time indicated that he had the followingcrops: 1908--15 acres in flax and spelz, yielding 35 bu flax and 200 spelz 1909--5 acres wheat, 10 acres spelz, yielding 50 bu wheat and 140spelz 1910--15 acres flax, 5 acres spelz and 10 acres barley He also had 4 acres fenced, grazed 10 head cattle and owned 4 horses.He had a 28x16 frame house with an upstairs, a 16x20 barn, a 12x14barn/stable, a 14x18 blacksmith shop, a well and a windmill--allvalued at $1300. The final purchase of the land was made on 1 Jun 1910 at the cost of25 cents per acre, for a total of $197.60, and Jacob then received apatent for the land. OBITUARY The McLaughlin community was stunned Sunday morning by the suddenpassing of a 31-year resident and businessman, Jacob J.Schweigert. Mr.Schweigert had just finished the adult Sunday school class in hischurch when he suffered a fatal heart attack. He was 78. Funeralservices will be held Thursday at the First Baptist Church atMcLaughlin at 2 P.M. Services will be conducted by the Rev. AlfredWeisshar, superintendent of the Baptist Home for the Aged at Bismarck.Jacob J. Schweigert was born September 15, 1885 in Odessa,Russia. Hewas the son of Jacob and Katharina Schweigert. As a youth he acceptedthe Lord Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour and was baptized in theBaptist faith before leaving the Old Country. "Jake", as he was betterknown, came to the United States in 1905. He first resided at Eurekawhere he was employed in a general store and in a blacksmith shop. Afew years later he went to Ashley, ND where he met and married EmmaMayor (sic) on March 3, 1908. In 1912 the young couple moved toBismarck, ND to make their home. There their eight children were born.Mr. Schweigert became an American citizen in 1913. He worked as aforeman in a garage in Bismarck for 18 years. In 1930 the family movedto Plevna, Mont. where he operated a repair shop until 1933 when hemoved with his family to McLaughlin. Here he worked as a mechanicuntil 1937 when he became associated with Ford and also with JohnDeere farm machinery. He disposed of this business in 1955. In April1949, he signed a contract with Chevrolet and in 1955 he acquired theOldsmobile franchise at McLaughlin. He was joined by his son Ted in1942 and the two have operated the Schweigert Chevrolet Company as apartnership since that time. His first wife, Emma, passed away in 1948and in 1949 he married Emilia Quenzer (nee Dietterle). He is survivedby his wife, Emelia, two daughters, (Anna) Mrs. Andrew Bertsch,McLaughlin; (Verna) Mrs. Christ Aldinger, Billings, Mont., and threesons, Henry of Cedarville, Ill., Reuben of Fairfield, Calif. andTheodore W. of McLaughlin; two sisters, Freida Weisenburger of GreatFalls, Mont., Mrs. John (Anna) Bentz of Lodi, Calif. There are threestepdaughters, twenty grand children and two great grandchildren. Hewas preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, two sisters, oneinfant son and two infant daughters. Mr. Schweigert was a devoutChristian and always played an important part in church affairs. Hewas a charter member of the Bismarck Baptist Church. He served hisChurch and Lord in various capacities such as Sunday schoolsuperintendent, Sunday school teacher, secretary, treasurer anddeacon. He loved to sing and for many years sang in a male quartet inthe church. He also served as trustee for the Bismarck Baptist Homefor the Aged and at the time of his passing was serving on the Boardof Directors of this Home. He had recently been re-elected to serve asDeacon of the Baptist Church in McLaughlin. Through his demise hischurch and the McLaughlin community has lost a citizen, advisor andfriend. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. Jake alwayssaid, "You are only as old as you feel." At the time of his passing,he was 78 years, 8 months and 7 days young.
