1810 Census, Randolph County, Virginia The head of household is Joseph Walker. There are seven people inthe household. There are six white males under 10 years of age, and one white male 16to 25 years of age. It is not known why the wife and daughter are notcounted in the household. There were six or seven chidren living atthe time of this census, five or six boys and one girl. 1820 Census, Randolph County, Virginia The head of household is Joseph Walker. There are nineteen people inthe household. The four white males under 10 years of age would be Jesse, Eber,Solomon and Levi. The three white males 10 to under 16 years of age would be George,Joseph, and probably Solomon. The one white male 16 to under 18 years of age would be John. The two white males 18 to under 26 years of age would be Ely, as wellas one unidentified individual. The one white male 45 years of age or older would be Joseph. The two white females under 10 years of age would be Sarah and Mary. The one white female 16 to under 26 years of age would be anunidentified individual. The one white female 45 years of age or older would be Barbara,although she was only 39 at the time of the census. There are also four foreigners living in the household. 1830 Census, Randolph County, Virginia. The head of household is Joseph Walker. There are thirteen people inthe household. The one white male under 5 years of age would be Silas. The one white male 10 to under 15 years of age would be Martin. The three white males 15 to under 20 years of age would be Jesse, Eberand Levi. The two white males 20 to under 30 years of age would be Joseph andGeorge. The one white male 50 to under 60 years of age would be Joseph. The one white female 5 to under 10 years of age would be Susan. The three white females 10 to under 15 years of age would be Sarah andMary. The one white female 40 to under 50 years of age would be Barbara. The three eldest sons, Ely, John and Joseph, had their own householdsat the time of this census. 1840 Census, Randolph County, Virginia. The head of household is Joseph Walker. There are five people in thehousehold. The one white male 10 to under 15 years of age would be Silas. The one white male 60 to under 70 years of age would be Joseph. The two white females 15 to under 20 years of age would be Mary andSusan. The one white female 50 to under 60 years of age would be Barbara. The daughter Sarah was evidently already married and living with hernew husband Peter Huffman at the time this census was conducted. Hishousehold is also listed in the census, though it is listed in DesMoines County, Iowa. Two sons, Eber and Levi, have yet to be located on this census. Biography Biography: 1975. WALKER (family) Joseph Walker (1775-1850) [sic: 1856], a native of Virginia and asoldier in the War of 1812, married Barbara Flater [sic Teter] (died1851 [sic: 1850]) in 1795. They came to Des Moines County in 1836,settling in Benton Township where there was a "Walker Settlement,"with many families of Walkers. Many or all of the children of Josephand Barbara Walker came to Iowa with them or later. The first burialin the Walker Settlement cemetery was that of Asa, son of Eber andSara Walker, who fell into a well and drowned in 1846. Joseph and Barbara Walker's children were Silas, Joseph, Levi, Mary(Mrs. Hezekiah) Trimble, Martin, Jesse, John, George, Sarah (Mrs.Peter) Huffman, and Ely. Joseph and Barbara's son John (1802-1865) married Elizabeth Dean (died1885) in Virginia, and they came to Iowa in 1839. Their children wereSolomon, E. S. (Edman), Jesse, George, Margaret Mitchell, Elijah, JaneGarrison, Rebecca Hughes, Mary Ann (Mrs. Isaac) Salladay and TheresaReepe (Riepe?). Three of the children of John and Elizabeth Dean Walker came to HenryCounty in the 1860's: George, Jesse and Elijah. George and Jesse,identical twins, arrived, according to Jesse Walker's obituary, in1862 which was the year he was married. Both the families lived fortwo years in the same house on the present Fitzpatrick farm. LaterGeorge lived on the present Zen Earnest farm and Jesse northeast oftown. George Walker (1838-1917) married Eliza Mahan (1841-1905) and they hadten children. Among them were John William, Mary Ita, Frank, Edmond,Charles, James, Jesse, Etta (Mrs. Alva) Holland, and Belle. John William (1862-1940) married Luella Copeland (1866-1940), andtheir children were Roy (1889-1960) and Mabel. John William (J. W.)operated a hardware [store] in New London from 1906 to 1916, sellingit to Wright and Holland. Roy Walker married Gladys Davey, daughter ofJohn and Clara Stuck Davey, and a great-granddaughter of earlysettlers Jacob and Catherine Shopbell. They had one son, Wendell(1918-1927). Mabel Walker was principal and a teacher in Mt. PleasantHigh School. Mary Ita Walker married Jerry Burge, grandson of Jacob and RachelBurge, and moved to Nebraska. Frank Walker (1868-1932) married Margaret Drewer, daughter of HenryDrewer. Their children were Helen (Mrs. William) Wellington whose sonis Billy G. Wellington; Carl; Glenn who married Stella Summers; Ellis;and Laura (Mrs. Leland) Bozarth (1893-1952). Laura and LelandBozarth's children were Bernice Peterson, Willis, Bernadine Larson,Gene, Keith, Garnet Coberley, Marvin, Bonita, Waunita, and Joyce.Willis and Pauline Bozarth are the parents of William and Paula (Mrs.Richard) Turner. Willis is the New London town marshal. Edmond Walker (1870-1937) married Luella Parks (1875-1926), who wasborn in Pennsylvania and came to Iowa as a baby. Her mother died andshe was reared by the Elias Pricketts. Edmond and Luella Walker hadone daughter, Vera (Mrs. Elmer) Leedham. Charles Walker (1879-1967) married Ida Fraker (1880-1959), daughter ofReverend Joseph and Martha Fraker. Charles was with [the] Iowa StateBank for 37 years, from Assistant Cashier in 1917 to director in 1954.They had no children. George Walker's twin brother, Jesse (1838-1923), married MariaChrissinger and they had six children. Their daughter Hattie(1871-1934) married John Flam (1873-1957), the son of George and MaryCoppes Flam, early settlers in Des Moines County and later HenryCounty. Their children were Mildred (Mrs. Lisle) Shrader, Jessie (Mrs.Earl) Carter, Marie (Mrs. Lawrence) Swan, and Wilbur. Wilbur marriedMargaret Schryer and they had one son Glen Bentley (Ben). Another child of Jesse and Maria Walker was Harlan, who was bookkeeperat the J. E. Peterson store and became a banker. He helped organizethe bank at Rome, Iowa, in 1905 and was its first cashier. George and Jesse Walker's brother Elijah (1845-1932) followed them toHenry County in 1867, and bought land northwest of town near theWinfield road. Elijah married Alice Conklin (died 1907), and they hadseven children. One of them was Ralph Walker (1887-1941) who wasmarried to Roberta May Bishop. Ralph was employed by the telephonecompany from 1909 to 1941, and was manager at the time of his suddendeath. Other children of Elijah and Alice Conklin Walker were ZulaDrewer, Homer, Hugh, and Ruby Myers. Another son of John and Elizabeth Dean Walker was E. S. (Edman) Walker(born 1829). He went by wagon train to California in 1850 and returnedto Des Moines County via Panama and New York a year later. He marriedMatilda Courts, and later Margaret Tee. Children were Harvey, Herman,John and Mary Scott from the first marriage, and William and Etta fromthe second marriage. Joseph and Barbara Walker's son Ely and his wife Annie were theparents of Betty, Isaac, John, Emily, Mary Ann, Melinda and Enos. Among Isaac Walker's children were George, Charles B. and James R.George married Matilda Wischmeier, and their children were EthelMcDonald, Viola Jackson, Della Brun, Boyd, Roy, and Forrest. Charles B. Walker married Cynthia Kaster and their children were Cora(Mrs. J. L.) Jordan, Chester, Bates, Walter and Lawrence. Chester(1886-1964) married Selma Walker (1884-1948), who was the daughter ofSilas and Louise Distelhorst Walker, of another branch of the family.They had no children. Bates Walker married Katherine Wagner, and theirchildren were Gilbert, Corwyn, Albert, Katherine Miller, LaVerne,Wayne, and Grace Westfall. Corwyn Walker married Margaret Duke and their children were JeanO'Neill, Patricia Allen, and Cathy (Mrs. Mark) Krogmeier. Mark andCathy Krogmeier had triplets, Jonathan, Jennifer and Chad, inDecember, 1973. Walter Walker married Isabelle Foster, and theirchildren were Helen (Mrs. Clifford) Tisor, and Thomas who marriedBetty McDowell. Lawrence Walker lives in Mt. Pleasant and has a son,Larry, who is a Burlington policeman. Isaac Walker's son James married Nora Van Osdol, and their son Ralphmarried Versa Dockendorff. Linnea Walker, Ralph and Versa's daughter,married Billy Wellington. Joseph Walker's grave is located in North Walker Cemetery in DesMoines County, Iowa. The inscription on his gravestone is: "JosephWalker died June 25, 1851, aged 76 years, 2 months, 26 days."
