He was the 8th child of Abraham and Mary. His parents were among theearliest white settlers in St. Clair Co. They arrived late in 1797 asmembers of the Badgley party from West Virginia. By 1804 the TeterFamily was established in a permanent location near the mouth of theSilver Creek, adjacent to property of Peter Mitchell, another BadgleyParty member. At the death of his father, at the age of six, he wassent to live with friends in Ridge Prairie, but returned to the SilverCreek farm soon after his mother's remarriage to Peter Mitchell in1820. As a young man Solomon found work in Sangamon County, where he becameacquainted with Abraham Lincoln. He and his brother Philip fought inthe Black Hawk War. Solomon lived to be one of the last five survivingwarriors. He and Mary had 15 children, five of whom died in infancy.He was a prominent member of the Baptist Church and a respectedcitizen, active in civic affairs. He was appointed guardian of hisdeceased brother, Levi's 8 minor children (1 Mar 1839)
