Written for Jimmie's Book of Memories just before his death: 11 April1996 Dear Jim, Some of the most pleasant memories of my childhood center around ourmany trips from Tulsa to Hannibal to visit Grandmother Whaley and achance to play with my closest cousin, Jimmy Boling. From pictures ofus at the Whaley farm when you were just a baby and I wasn't too mucholder, I think I must have been pretty put out by your arrival on thescene. You are sitting on Grandmother's lap, a place I definitelywanted to be, and I'm standing beside you in tears! That's the onlyevidence anywhere that we didn't get along! I vividly remember manyadventures we had as we investigated every nook and cranny in each ofthe many farm buildings. One of my favorites was going to the corncrib to slide down the corn piled high after harvest. I can stillsmell the aroma of the dried corn in the summer heat which had builtup under the roof of the old wooden shed. We vied over who wouldcollect the most eggs from the hen house and who could find the hiddennests in the loft of the dairy barn. I recall the time you convincedme to climb up to the loft of the horse barn. I went up okay, butgetting down was another thing. That first step was so BIG! P.Q.finally had to come rescue me, much to your chagrin. But, the mostfun was going to the famous two-seater outhouse together and readingthe old catalogs hanging there by a string on the wall! Then, as wegrew older, I remember when you were learning to drive. You must havebeen younger than fourteen when you demonstrated your skills (was itin an old Model T?) taking us all over the fields at your farm atbreakneck speed scaring the beejeebers out of me. Once you earnedyour license, and I got over my fright, you would drive me aroundHannibal showing me your favorite haunts and we'd visit the antiquestores and junk shops to discover new "finds". We thought we werehot stuff out on our own in the town! In looking back over the manyyears since then, I regret that we've not been together very often, just at special family occasions once every few years. No telling whatother escapades we might have had and may have yet, if given half achance. But, next time, I'm driving!
