Gottfried was born in Schwaigern on May 10, 1808. He is also listed asWeingartner, a vintner, and also was married twice. His first wife wasWilhemina Carolina Frank, daughter of Gottlieb Frank and MariaElisabeth Neuinger, born November 20, 1806. They were married on April1st, 1834, in Schwaigern. She tragically died three months after thewedding on July 2, 1834, of "Nervose Schleimm Fieber". We askedlicensed German nurses for a translation of the illness and foundthere are no exact translations. The Family History Center referencematerial lists "Nervenfieber" as typhoid fever. [We have similarproblems with English as I discovered an ancestor from my mother'sfamily had died of consumption. Today consumption is called pulmonarytuberculosis.] Gottfried, age twenty six, married Christina Sätzler, age twenty two,on January 24, 1835. Christina was born on February 12, 1813, also inSchwaigern. Christina's father is listed as "Jos.." Sätzler, p.571,and her mother as Ana Maria Kober. Gottfried and Christina had sevenchildren before leaving Schwaigern in 1847. They were: Firstborn, nameundecipherable, born and died on February 5, 1836 Rosina, born March14, 1837, married John Remmele Johanne Heinrich, born November 13,1838, married Mary Henry Elisabeth, born and died on February 25, 1840Albrecht, born May 30, 1841, died July 12, 1841 Maria Dorothea, bornMarch 6, 1844, married Frederick Tresch Gottfried, born February 4,1846, died August 20, 1846 in Schwaigern. According to Charles T. Mindling, Gottfried and Christina leftSchwaigern in March, 1847, with Rosina (Rosa), Johanne Heinrich(Henry), and Maria Dorothea (Mary). Accompanying them on the journey(Heimatbuch Schwaigern) were Christina's sisters, Elisabeth Sätzler,who paid 600 guilders to settle all debts and taxes, and HannahSätzler Leibbrand and her family. [Hannah's husband's name is notstated. There are two Leibbrands listed as departing at the same time:Farmer Matthäus Leibbrand paid 5000 guilders to leave Schwaigern,farmer Gottfried Leibbrand paid 3000 guilders.] It is believed theysailed from Le Havre, France, and arrived in June 1847 after spending53 days at sea aboard the "Golden Dame". Their port of entry isthought to be New York. It is known they arrived in Washington County,Ohio, in June, 1847. Gottfried was thirty nine and Christina wasthirty four years old. The remaining children were all born inWashington County, Ohio. They were: Nicolaus, born October 16, 1847,married Elizabeth Peters, died October 18, 1934, in Ohio, Hiram, bornNovember 14, 1849, married Jenny Hess, died December 19, 1936 in Ohio,Jacob, born February 5, 1852, married Anna Maria Peters, died April30, 1931 in Washington County, Ohio, Albert, died 1853 in WashingtonCounty, Ohio. Believed to be the infant that died at birth shortlyafter Gottfried's death. Gottfried Mündling's name was changed to Godfried Mindling on hisarrival in America in 1847. One thought is as there is no umlaut inEnglish, and the letter "I" more closely sounds like the originalGerman pronunciation than the letter "E", the name became Mindling.There is another thought that may be more correct. When the German name Mündling is writtenlonghand, it appears to have two letter "i's, side by side, as inMiindling. The German umlaut "u" is written exactly as two lower case "i"s. The answer may simply be that the Immigration officer didn'tspeak or understand German, and simply struck off the extra letter"i"! There are references to both Mündling and Mendling in the olddocuments, especially Eberhard's, where the name is predominatelyspelled Mendling. However, the name is usually found spelledMündling. Both spellings are often found on the same document. Thetranslated Württemberg Emmigration Index translates Mündling toMuendling, a common practice when encountering any umlaut vowel.
