When you're 100 years old, you can make such a claim. And Nellie willbe observing her 100th birthday Sunday. What does she think is the key to her longevity? "I've always been busy." she says. "I always had a good attitude, andthat means a lot. I never felt sorry for myself, no matter whathappened." Her son James, with whom she makes her home, will testify to that. "She's always been a hard worker." he says. "We were raised on a farm.She worked from daylight until way past dark every day." She also believes the fact she has been a hard worker all her life hascontributed. "I've worked hard and done a lot of things and seen a lot of things."she says. But James, 73, says his mother also has hinted at another reason shebelieves she has lived so long. "She helped to take care of her grandmother when everyone else failedto do it." he says. "It says in the Bible about homoring your parentsand your days will be long." Nellie has lived in Fairmont for about 10 years after residing inWorthington since 1926. She attended Gelnville College. "When I was born, the only hard road in America was the BrickyardTrack in Indianapolis." she says, noting how far the country has comeover the past century. Nellie was asked about her family. "I had two boys and two girls and 13 grandchildren," she says. "I alsohave one adopted grandson. David Wimer (former Fairmont fire chief)was my adopted grandson." One daughter, Kathlyn Davis and one son, Harold Wimer, are deceased. Betty Ekgell and James Wimer are living. Her husband Baxter Wimer, passed away in 1984. "We had Wimer's Kitchen," she says. "My husband and two sons, Jamesand Harold, owned the business." Nellie takes great pride in the fact she was raised in a Christianhome. Asked what thing pleased her the most about her lengthy life,she said it was making a home and raising four children. And who had the most influence in her life? "My mother--she was a really smart person and a school teacher. Hername was Zella Davidson. My doctor for 42 years who helped me througha lot of bad times--J. J. Jenkins. And a lady who was my neighbortaught me piano and introduced me to psychology. I have used that allmy life since she taught me how to cope with things." Nellie was a member of the Harter Hill Church that "was in sight ofour house. I played the piano for it for a long time." Nellie enjoyed the outdoors and doing things with her husband. "I liked to travel. I also liked to hunt and fish. I also did fancyneedlework. But I felt a little self-conscious about hunting until Iread that Jacked Kennedy had the same kind of a gun I was huntingwith. So I didn't feel embarrassed after that. I just hunted andenjoyed it. She said her husband Baxter "fished in the Pacific, the Altantic, theGulf of Mexico and the Great Lakes. And I always went with him. James Says "she has killed squirrel, deer, turkey, groundhogs, andcaught a truckload of fish. And she has told me stuff from herchildhood that's hard to believe." Nellie says she doesn't get out much any more because she iswheelchair bound, and she's been under the weather this week. But hermind remains extremely sharp.
