1. Notes of Catherine J. Hill Ella lived with her sister, Velma Hill Purvis, and her husband,Bernard Charles Purvis, Jr., for many years in Alton, Woodriver andGodfrey, IL. When they were living in Woodriver, the three of themowned and operated a drive-in restaurant just a very short distancefrom their home. Later they sold the restaurant and Bert becameinterested in land development. In the early 1980s they built a homein Glendale, St. Louis Co., MO, where Ella died. Ella was RomanCatholic. Ella Hill, was in the 1970s living in Godfrey, Illinois, when shestated, to her niece, Catherine J. Hill, that her grandmother,(Hannah) Emaline Mitchell Hill, told Ella when she was a child, thather husband, Peter Hill's, grandfather, Peter Hill, I, who came to St.Clair County with his wife Elizabeth Wilderman, 1803-1805, came tothis country from Holland. We don't know if he came as a child withhis father or later when grown. This story fits in with the accountsgiven by Mrs. Collett to Iola Avenel Hill Kaiser, and Lora WildermanStookey. We recently found (2002) the following items in our records pertainingto the Old Hill Family Bible that was brought to America: Iola Avenel Hill Kaiser (who gave us the Hill Family Genealogy)statedto Catherine & Richard Hill, that Mary Collett had the Hill FamilyBible; this Bible had come with the Hill family to America. The HillFamily had gone from England to Holland long before they came toAmerica. The Bible was of the 1700s; it fell into the sea, and whenrecovered, all the names and records had been washed away. Iola saidthat the last known person to have the Bible was Mary's daughter,Irene Collett Goetz of Freeburg, IL. Irene died 1899, before hermother, Mary, who died in 1947. All, of Mary's family, are nowdeceased (2002). We do not know who has the Bible at this time. Catherine & Richard Hill spoke to Mrs. Sherman Stookey (nee LoraWilderman) in the early 1970s. According to Lora, now deceased, sheknew as a child a Mrs. Collett (Mary A. Hill, born 1858, died 1947,daughter of Peter Hill, II, and Emily Magruder Thrift) of Freeburg,Illinois. Her daughter was Irene Goetz (nee Irene Collett, born 1877,died 1899), who married Joseph Howard Goetz. Mrs. Collett stated toLora, when Lora was a child "that back in the very early 1700s thefamily "Hill or Heil" fled from England across the channel to Holland. On the way their Family Bible fell into the water, but they had fishedit out. All names, and records in the Bible were washed away.
