Biography Claus Cordes was born May 1, 1842 at Bremervoerde, Hanover, Germany.He came to America with his parents sometime between May 1, 1852 andMay 1, 1853 when he was 10 years old. He served under Captain Bloessas a Private in Company H, (?) th. Regiment Enrolled Missouri Militiawhich was ordered into service July 29, 1862 at Sedalia, Missouri byCol. E. C. Catherwood. The unit was relieved of duty September 26,1862 by Col. Spedden. He was shown as "absent without leave" on anofficial document. He enlisted in 8th. Reg't Cavalry S. M. Vols,Company K, as a Private at Camp Gravelly, Missouri on September 2,1863 under Captain Glade. He transferred to Construction Company onMay 10, 1865. His physical description, taken from his militaryrecord: Age 20, Height 5' 9", fair hair, light complexion, single,farmer, residence Cole Camp, Missouri. He married Catherine Reck inBenton County, Missouri on January 12, 1866, They moved to PocahontasCounty, Iowa about 1895. They lived for one year in Sherman Township,near Ware, Iowa, then moved to Lizard Township, Iowa where his wifedied in 1896. He died on January 4, 1917 of cancer and is buried inMarble Valley Cemetery, Gilmore City, Iowa.
