World Connect Project - Rector-Ridgeway Family (Jenell RectorCrermeans - 2006) The following information was recorded in the Grant County's 1980history book in Oklahoma. One of the oldest settlers of Grant County, when it was still IndianTerritory, was John Cowich Myers. He moved to the area with his wifeMargaret Ellen Lutman Myers, and their family of five children. Johnand Margaret Ellen had come from Morgan County, Missouri, via Haven,Reno County, Kansas. They had buried three babies in the Mount CarmelCemetery in Morgan County. In the Haven Cemetery there are two moresmall graves. John Cowich Myers was born in Lancaster, Lancaster County,Pennsylvania, on November 22, 1835. Early records indicate his parentswere Adam and Martha Cowich Myers. John had an older sister,Elizabeth, who settled in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and two Youngerbrothers, William who went to Texas, and Adam, who settled inMissouri. John's father died when John was only 14, and familytradition tells us John left home so he would not be a burden on hismother. John Myers next appears in Bloomfield, Perry County, Pennsylvaniawhere he joined the 47th Pennsylvania Infantry, in the Civil War, in1860, and re-enlisted in 1863. He was discharged in 1865. He receivedan injury during the war which plagued him the remainder of his life.He eventually found his way to Morgan County, Missouri, to visit hisbrother, Adam, who by now was married and had a family of his own. There he met Margaret Ellen Lutman, and they were married on April 11,1869. Margaret Ellen, interestingly, was born in Perry County, Pennsylvaniato John and Sarah Lutman on March 22, 1845. The Lutman family had cometo Morgan County, apparently following the Civil War. There were sixchildren born to John and Margaret Ellen in Morgan County. Three ofthem died as infants. The family moved to Haven, Kansas, where threechildren were born, but only on lived. At the opening of the strip, John and Margaret Ellen came to Oklahoma. They had lived in Texas and Nebraska prior to coming to Oklahoma;however, when they settled there, they seemed to have found theirhome. Margaret Ellen died at Wakita on September 22, 1904, and isburied in the Wakita Cemetery. John sold his farm soon after Margaretdied, and spent his remaining years with his daughter, Elizabeth AnnMyers Burk. He loved to fish, and spent many happy hours withgrandchildren on the fishing stream. His grandchildren, now with greatgrandchildren of their own, can recall playing checkers with him, andrecall the great sense of humor that he had. We find an earlydescription of John C., wherein it states he had blue eyes, black hairand stood about 5 feet 8 inches tall. Margaret Ellen and John weresurvived by five children: Elizabeth Ann Myers Burk, Charles David,Jesse Jerome, Walter Lewis, and a daughter of Margaret's by a previousmarriage, Carrie Myers Smith of Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Their graves are in the Wakita Cemetery, marked by an old fashionedstone, worn by the passing of time. Their family has a heritage ofmusic, both the creation of music and the enjoyment of it. Also theyare a mechanical family. They are intelligent and responsible and aGod fearing people with a deep love for their fore bearers. History book states that Jesse Jerome was born in Morgan County, MillCreek Township, Missouri on July 16, 1875. He married Dollie Rowe, onMarch 6, 1898, she was from Sydney, Iowa, and daughter of John andLouisiana Rowe. She was a cousin to Samuel Daniel Cranmer. Walter L.Myers the youngest child married Estella Johnson. Charles David Myersmarried Mary Ellen Cranmer. Elizabeth Myers married Claude Burk andthen married Japtha Claflin. Carrie married Ballard Smith and theylived near Kingfisher, OK.[a2001.FTW] Sept 15, 1893 - Cherokee Outlet Run into Oklahoma Territory for aquarter section claim - Homestead Act of 1862 John and Margaret were participants along with 100, 000 others: At noon on September 16, 1893, more than 100,000 people lined theborders of the Cherokee Outlet listening for the pistol shots thatstarted one of the world's greatest races.
