Obituary Frieske, Gustav h/o Lydia, (d. 9-20-1981; b. 1897; TS; OC; dc; obit) “Funeral services were held on Wednesday, Sept 23, 1981 from theUnited Congregational Church, for Gustav Frieske, who passed away onSept 20, 1981, at the Odessa Convalescent Center. He was 84 years ofage. Pastor Everett Schoessler officiated at the service. GustavFrieske was born Aug 26, 1897 in Bessarabia, Russia, the son ofChristoff and Wilhemina (Krause) Frieske. He was baptized as aninfant in Russia and came to the United States with his family at theage of seven years. The family arrived on Christmas Eve 1903 andsettled on a farm south of Odessa. Gust attended country schools. OnFeb 9, 1913, he was confirmed into the Christian Faith in the PilgrimCongregational Church by the Rev Johannes Reister. He was married toLydia Hemmerling on Jan 28, 1923 in the Pilgrim Church by Rev K KMaier. Gust continued to farm after his marriage until around 1940,when he and Mrs. Frieske moved to Spokane. He worked for a casketcompany in Spokane for a number of years, then worked as a painter. Heand his wife managed an apartment building in Spokane until hisretirement. They moved back to Odessa in 1977. Mrs. Frieske passedaway in a Spokane nursing home on July 11, 1978. Gust loved music andwas active in choirs in both Spokane and Odessa. He was an avid bowlerand was a member of the United Congregational Church. Preceding him indeath were his wife, his parents, one brother and two sisters.Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Tillie Lobe of Odessa and Bertha,Mrs. Rudolph Sauer, of Lind; numerous nieces and nephews, and manyfriends. Special music for the service was provided by Delores Cook atthe organ. The men’s quartet, consisting of Bill Wenz, Delbert Cook,Eugene Frieske and Neil Jeske sang, ‘It Is Well With My Soul’ and‘Rock of Ages’. Casket bearers were Ivan Hemmerling, Leonard Lobe,Harold Hoefel, Dick Sauer, Art Deife, and Bob Hemmerling. Intermentwas in the Odessa Cemetery with Strate Funeral Home in charge ofarrangements.” (Odessa Record: 9-24-1981)
