Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley, Foundation for Medieval Genealogy KONRAD of Franconia, son of HEINRICH Graf [im Wormsgau] & his wifeAdelheid [Matfriede] ([990]-Utrecht 4 Jun 1039, bur Speyer cathedral)."Heinricus…Romanorum imperator augustus" renewed the privileges ofKloster Fulda by undated charter, placed in the compilation with othercharters dated 1020, witnessed by "Godifridi ducis, Berinhardi ducis,Thiederici ducis, Welphonis comitis, Cunonis comitis, Kunrati comitis,Ottonis comitis, Adilbrahtis comitis, Bobonis comitis, Fridericicomitis, Bezilini comitis, Ezonis comitis palatini"[333], the order ofwitnesses presumably giving some idea of the relative importance ofthese named nobles at the court of Emperor Heinrich II at the time.Herimannus names "Counradus senior, filius Heinrici et Adalheidæ" whenrecording his candidacy to succeed as king of Germany in 1024[334].Thietmar names "Konrad who had illegally married his own cousin, thewidow of Duke Ernst" when recording that he was wounded when GerhardGraf von Metz (his maternal uncle) met Godefroi II Duke of LowerLotharingia for "a judicial duel" 27 Aug 1017[335]. Wipo, in hisdescription of the election of Konrad II King of Germany in 1024,calls him "Cuono of Worms Duke of the Franks" and "Cuono theYounger"[336]. He was elected as KONRAD II King of Germany at Chamba,Rheingau 4 Sep 1024, crowned at Mainz 8 Sep 1024. Crowned King ofItaly at Milan in Mar 1026. Crowned Emperor KONRAD I at Rome 26 Mar1027. Rudolf III King of Burgundy in 1032 bequeathed his kingdom toEmperor Konrad, who was crowned king of Burgundy at Payerne 2 Feb1033[337]. Konrad's succession in Burgundy was challenged by hiswife's first cousin Eudes II Comte de Blois, with support from GéraudComte de Genève, but he consolidated his position by 1037 when heproclaimed a law which established the basis for the inheritance oftitles and offices in the kingdom[338]. Founded Kloster Limburg1024-1032. The necrology of Prüm records the death "II Non Iun" of"Cuonradus imperator"[339]. The Annales Spirenses record his burialat Speyer[340]. m ([31 May 1015/Jan 1017]) as her third husband, GISELA of Swabia, widow firstly of BRUNO Graf [von Braunschweig], secondly of ERNST Dukeof Swabia [Babenberg], daughter of HERMANN II Duke of Swabia & hiswife Gerberga of Upper Burgundy (11 Nov 990-Goslar 15 Feb 1043, burSpeyer cathedral). The Annalista Saxo names her three husbands, although the order of her first and second marriages is interchangedwhich appears impossible chronologically[341]. She was crowned Queenof Germany at Köln 21 Sep 1024. Crowned empress, with her husband, atRome 26 Mar 1027. The Annalista Saxo records the death of "Gislaimperatrix mater Heinrici regis" on "XVI Kal Martii" and her burial atSpeyer[342]. The necrology of St Gall records the death "XV Kal Feb"of "Gisila imperatrix"[343]. Herimannus records her death atGoslar[344]. The Annales Spirenses record the burial at Speyer of"Heinricus senior [=Heinricus IV] et aviam suam"[345], the latterassumed to be his paternal grandmother Gisela rather than his maternalgrandmother. Emperor Konrad & his wife had three children: 1. HEINRICH (Oosterbecke [Ostrebeck] 28 Oct 1017-Burg Bodfeldim Harz 5 Oct 1056, bur Speyer Cathedral). "Cunradus…Romanorumimperator augustus" granted property to the church of Paderborn bycharter dated 7 Apr 1027, naming for the first time "filii nostriHeinrici"[346]. He was crowned as HEINRICH III King of Germany atAachen 14 Apr 1028 and crowned Emperor HEINRICH II at Rome 25 Dec1046. - see below. 2. BEATRIX (-24 Sep 1036). "Chuonradus…Romanorum imperatoraugustus" donated property to the church of Worms with "filii nostriHeinrici Regis, filie quoque nostre Beatricis" for the souls of"parentum nostrorum defunctorum atavi nostri ducis Chuonradi, avienostre Iudithe, patris nostri Heinrici, patrui nostri ducis Chuonradieiusque coniugis Mathildis, sororis etiam nostre Iudithe" by charterdated 30 Jan 1034[347]. The necrology of Merseburg records the death"24 Sep" of "Beatrix filia Cuonradi imperatoris"[348]."Chuonradus…Romanorum imperator augustus" donated property to KlosterQuedlinburg "pro remedio animæ filiæ nostræ Beatricis" by charterdated 25 Oct 1036[349]. 3. MATHILDE ([Oosterbecke] 1027[350]-Worms 1034 [after 30Jan], bur Worms Cathedral). Wipo names "filia imperatoris Chuonradiet Giselæ, Mahthilda" when recording her death and burial at Worms in1034, specifying that she was betrothed to "Heinrico regiFrancorum"[351]. Her marriage was arranged to confirm a peace compactagreed between Henri I King of France and Emperor Konrad at Deville inMay 1033[352]. Her absence from the list of deceased relatives in thedonation of "Chuonradus…Romanorum imperator augustus" to the church ofWorms by charter dated 30 Jan 1034 suggests that Mathilde died afterthat date, while her absence from the list of the children of EmperorKonrad named in the same charter is explainable on the basis of heryouth[353]. Betrothed (May 1033) to HENRI I King of France, son ofROBERT II " le Pieux" King of France & his third wife Constanced'Arles [Provence] ([end 1009/May 1010]-Palais de Vitry-aux-Loges,forêt d’Orléans, Loiret 4 Aug 1060, bur église de l'Abbaye royale deSaint-Denis).
