Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley, Foundation for Medieval Genealogy 1. ANSBERT . The Chronico Marcianensi de Sancta Rictrudenames “Ansberto Duci nobili in Germania” when recording hismarriage[360]. A 9th century genealogy names "Ansbertus…ex generesenatorum", his brothers "Deotarium, Firminum, Gamardum, Aigulfumepiscopum et Ragnifridum" and their supposed descendants, Ansbert'smarriage to "filiam Hlotarii regis Francorum…Blithildem" and theirchildren as shown below[361]. m BILICHILDIS, daughter of CLOTAIRE I[Chlothachar] King of the Franks & his third wife Ingundis [Ingonde]([525/40]-). The Liber Historiæ Francorum records that"Chlotharius…rex" had seven children by "Ingunde", the same six as arenamed in Gregory of Tours with a marginal note adding "Blitchildim" asthe seventh child and specifying that she married "Ansbertusnobilissimus" and by him was mother of "Arnoldum"[362]. Analternative origin for Bilichildis is provided by the ChronicoMarcianensi de Sancta Rictrude which names “Dagobertum Regem etBlithildem sororem eius” as children of “Lotharius…[et] Beretrudam”(chronologically impossible if she was the grandmother of ArnoulBishop of Metz, see below), but commenting that “others say” thatBilichildis was the daughter of “primi Lotharii avi istius”, addingthat Bilichildis married “Ansberto Duci nobili in Germania”[363]. TheCarmen de Exordio Gentis Francorum names "Hlotharius[rex]…filia…Blithild" and records her marriage to "Ansbertus"[364].The recorded names of the alleged children of Bilichildis do not havea Merovingian ring about them. It is uncertain whether Bilichildisexisted at all or whether she and her family were invented for thepurposes of compiling a Merovingian descent for the Carolingiandynasty, an enterprise undertaken in Metz from the late 8th centuryonwards (see below, under her alleged grandson). Her absence from thelist of the children of King Clotaire given by Gregory of Tourscertainly suggests that she was a spurious later invention, althoughGregory's treatment of the families of the early Merovingians was notexhaustive, as can be seen from the examples of Berthoara, daughter ofKing Theodebald I, and Theodechildis sister of the same king (seeabove), whom Gregory does not mention at all. Settipani demonstratesconvincingly that there are sufficient indications in other primarysources that parts, if not all, these reconstructions may be based onhistorical fact[365]. The situation is further confused by theChronico Marcianensi de Sancta Rictrude which names “Adabaldus Dux, etfratres eius Herchenaldus Major-domus Occidentalis Franciæ etSigebertus Comes” as the sons of “Ansberto Duci nobili in Germania”and Bilichildis[366]. The Chronico omits Arnold, although the mentionof Erchinoald makes it clear that this source is completelyincompatible from a chronological point of view with the descentreported in the Carmen. Sifting the fact from the fiction in thesetwo sources is inevitably speculative. Ansbert & his wife had [four]children: a) [ARNOLD . The Liber Historiæ Francorum names "Arnoldum" asthe son of "Ansbertus" & his wife[367]. The Carmen de Exordio GentisFrancorum names (in order) "Arnoldumprimogenitum…Feriolum…Modericus…Tharsicia" as the four children of"Ansbertus" & his wife[368]. A 9th century genealogy names"primogenitus Arnoaldus…" as oldest son of Ansbert & his wife[369].] i) [ARNOUL ([580/85]-Remiremont 18 Jul [640], bur Remiremont, later transferred to Metz, basilique de Saint-Arnoul). A 9th centurygenealogy names "beatum Arnulfum episcopum" as the son of Arnold, andArnulf's sons "Flodulfum, Wallchisum et Anchisum"[370]. Settipanipoints out that this formed part of a series of genealogies compiledat Metz, from the late 8th century onwards, to glorify the ancestry ofthe Carolingian dynasty by establishing their descent from the earlyMerovingians and also from a family of Roman senatorial origin[371].The earlier Vita Sancti Arnulfi names "Arnulfus episcopus prosapiagenitus Francorum" but gives no further details of his ancestry[372].Another genealogy from the same period does not attempt to traceArnoul's ancestors further than naming "Buotgisus" as father of"Arnulfum…episcopum urbis Metensium", although the editor of theMonumenta Germaniæ in which this is published cites another sourcewhich names "Burtgisus, qui a multis cognominatur Arnoaldus" althoughthe dating of the latter is unclear[373].] b) [FERIOLUS . The Carmen de Exordio Gentis Francorum names(in order) "Arnoldum primogenitum…Feriolum…Modericus …Tharsicia" asthe four children of "Ansbertus" & his wife[374].] c) [MODERICUS . The Carmen de Exordio Gentis Francorum names(in order) "Arnoldum primogenitum…Feriolum…Modericus …Tharsicia" asthe four children of "Ansbertus" & his wife, recording that Modericuswas "in ordine frater"[375].] d) [THARSICIA . The Carmen de Exordio Gentis Francorum names(in order) "Arnoldum primogenitum…Feriolum…Modericus …Tharsicia" asthe four children of "Ansbertus" & his wife, recording that Tharsiciawas "puella dei"[376].] [360] Ex Chronico Marcianensi de Sancta Rictrude, RHGF III, p. 522.
