Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley, Foundation for Medieval Genealogy 1. CHILDERICH (-Tournai [481/82], bur Tournai). Gregory ofTours records that Merovech was the father of Childerich[17]. TheLiber Historiæ Francorum names "Merovechus…filium…Childerico"[18]. Hesucceeded in [451/57] as leader of the Franks in Roman Gaul, andsubsequently adopted the title CHILDERICH I King of the Franks, confirmed by his undated seal which bears the title "ChildericiRegiz"[19]. Gregory of Tours records that King Childerich's "privatelife was one long debauch" and that he was forced into exile inThuringia by his subjects who chose as his replacement the RomanGeneral Ægidius, named magister militum per Gallias in [456/57] andwho ruled for 8 years[20]. Gregory of Tours records Childerich'srestoration as king in Gaul, followed by his alliance with"Odovacar…[and] his Saxons" (indicating that this is unlikely to referto the Ostrogoth leader in Italy), and their joint subjugation of theAlamans[21]. A letter from Remigius Bishop of Reims to Childerich'sson Clovis congratulates the latter on taking over his father'sposition in "Belgica Secunda"[22], implying that Childerich'sauthority was limited to the north-east part of Gaul. The LiberHistoriæ Francorum records that "Childericus rex" reigned for 24years[23]. m ([464]) as her second husband, BASINA, formerly wife ofBASINUS King of Thuringia, daughter of ---. Gregory of Tours namesBasina as wife of Basinus King of Thuringia, with whom King Childerichsought refuge after being deposed, Basina deserting her first husbandto join Childerich after he was restored as king in Gaul[24]. Themarriage date is estimated on the basis of how long Childerich wasallegedly in exile, assuming that the date of his deposition isaccurate, and appears to be consistent with the estimated dates ofbirth of the couple's descendants. The Liber Historiæ Francorumrecords that "Childericus rex" committed adultery with "inToringam…Basina regina uxorem Bisini regis" who abandoned her husbandto join Childerich[25]. Assuming that Basina existed, it is unlikelythat her first name is correct considering that it is the feminineform of her first husband's name. King Childerich & his wife had fourchildren: a) CHLODOVECH [Clovis] ([464/67]-Paris [27 Nov] 511, burParis, basilique des Saints-Apôtres [later église deSainte-Geneviève]). Gregory of Tours names Clovis as son ofChilderich & Basina[26]. He succeeded his father in [481/82] asCLOVIS I King of the Franks. - see below. b) LANDECHILDIS [Lantilde]. Gregory of Tours namesLanthechild as sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptisedwith him after having followed the Arian faith[27]. She converted toArianism, according to the title of one of the sermons of AvitusBishop of Vienne[28]. c) AUDOFLEDIS . Gregory of Tours names Audofleda as sister ofKing Clovis, recording that she married Theodoric King of Italy[29].Iordanes records the marriage of Theodoric and "Lodoin Francorum regemfiliam eius Audefledam" and names her brothers "Celdebertum etHeldebertum et Thiudebertum"[30], although this is presumably anincorrect reference to her nephews and great-nephew with similarnames. m ([492]) THEODORIC King of the Ostrogoths in Italy, illegitimate son of THEODEMIR King of the Ostrogoths in Pannonia & hisconcubine Ereleuva --- ([454]-30 Aug 526). d) ALBOFLEDIS (-after 496). Gregory of Tours names Albofledas sister of King Clovis, specifying that she was baptised but diedsoon after, St Rémy sending a letter of condolence to her brother[31].From the context, it would appear that her baptism took place aroundthe same time as her brother was baptised. “Remigius Episcopus” wroteto “Chlodoveo Regi” consoling him on the death of “germanavestra…Albochledis”[32]. [32] RHGF IV, p. 51. From Libri Historiarum by Gregory of Tours "Childeric was excessively wanton and being king of the Franks hebegan to dishonor their daughters. And they were angry with him onthis account and took his kingdom from him. And when he learned thatthey wished also to kill him he hastened to Thuringia, leaving there aman who was dear to him to calm their furious tempers; he arrangedalso for a sign when he should be able to return to his country, thatis, they divided a gold piece between them and Childeric took one halfand his friend kept the other part, saying: 'Whenever I send you thispart and the joined parts make one coin, then you shall returnsecurely to your native place.' Accordingly Childeric went off toThuringia and remained in hiding with king Basinus and Basina hiswife. The Franks, after he was driven out, with one accord selectedas king Egidius, whom we have mentioned before as the commander of thetroops sent by the republic. And when he was in the eighth year ofhis reign over them that faithful friend secretly won the good will ofthe Franks and sent messengers to Childeric with the part of thedivided coin which he had kept, and Childeric learned by this suresign that he was wanted by the Franks, and returned from Thuringia attheir request and was restored to his kingdom. Now when these princeswere reigning at the same time, the Basina whom we have mentionedabove left her husband and came to Childeric. And when he askedanxiously for what reason she had come so far to see him it is saidthat she answered: 'I know your worth,' said she, 'and that you arevery strong, and therefore I have come to live with you. For let metell you that if I had known of any one more worthy than you in partsbeyond the sea I should certainly have sought to live with him.' Andhe was glad and united her to him in marriage. And she conceived andbore a son and called his name Clovis. He was a great anddistinguished warrior.
