Medieval Lands by Charles Cawley, Foundation for Medieval Genealogy 1. EUDES ([770/80]-killed in battle [Touraine] Jun 834). Hisbirth date is estimated on the assumption that he was already maturewhen named for the first time in 810/11, but bearing in mind hisactive participation in the 834 battle in which he was killed. TheAnnales Fuldenses record that "Odo legatus imperatoris…orientaliumSaxonum præsidium" was captured by "Wilzis" in 810[118]. Einhard'sAnnales record "Uodo comes" as one of the signatories of peace withthe Vikings in 811[119]. He became Comte d'Orléans after theterritory was forfeited by Matfried[120]: the Miracula Sancti Bernardirecords that "Matfrido, comite quondam Aurelianensi" was deprived ofhis honours "culpam inertiæ" and "Odo" appointed in his place[121],presumably dated to [828]. From that time, Eudes and his brotherGuillaume were the most powerful supporters of Emperor Louis "lePieux" against his son Lothaire, whose rebellion was supported byMatfried. The Vita Hludowici Imperatoris records that "Aurelianensemurbem" was taken from "Hodone" and restored to "Mathfrido" [in830][122]. The Annales Bertiniani record that "Odo et Willelmusfrater eius" were among those killed fighting "Lantbertum etMatfridem" in 834[123]. Merlet suggests that the battle took place inTouraine[124]. The Annales Xantenses record that "Uodo comes etTheodo abbas" were killed in 834[125]. The Annales Fuldenses recordthe rebellion of "Mahtfredo et Lantberto" in 834 and the battle inwhich "Udo comes Aurelianensium et Theodo abbas sancti MartiniTuronensis" were killed[126]. The Chronicle of Adémar de Chabannesrecords that "Odo Aurelianorum comes" was killed fighting "LambertoNannetensi comite"[127]. The Miracula Sancti Bernardi names "Odonemfratremque illius Guillelmum, comitem Blesensium, Teutonem deniqueabbatem Sancti Martini, Guidonem comitem Cenomanensem" among thosekilled in battle against Lambert Comte de Nantes[128]. The ChronicaRainaldi records that "Odo comes Aurelianensium, Willelmus frater eiuscomes Blesensium, Guido comes Cenomanensium" died in battle fighting"Lambertum" in 835[129]. It is more likely that this battle tookplace in 834, assuming that it is correct that Count Lantbert wasestablished in Italy later that year. [m firstly ---. The charterquoted below, which records the confirmation of a donation to ToursSaint-Martin made by Comte Eudes and his son Guillaume, suggests thatGuillaume must have been considerably older than his sisterErmentrudis (whose birth is estimated to [830], see below). If thisis correct, it is possible that Guillaume was born from an earliermarriage of his father. The possibility of such an earlier marriageis also indicated by Eudes´s estimated birth date as shown above.] m[secondly] ENGELTRUDIS, sister of ADALHARD [IV], daughter of [LIUTHARDComte de Fézensac & his wife Grimhild ---]. The wife of Eudes isnamed by Nithard who records "Hirmentrude, daughter of Odo andIngiltrud" as the wife of Charles[130]. The primary source whichestablishes that she was the daughter of Adalhard [III] has not yetbeen identified. However, the Annales Bertiniani suggest that she wasthe sister of Adalhard [IV] when they record that "Carlomannus,Hlodowici regis Germaniæ" sought refuge with "Adalardo, Yrmintrudisreginæ avunculo, suo autem propinquo" after he was banished by hisfather following his rebellion in 861[131]. Comte Eudes & his [first]wife had one child: a) GUILLAUME (-executed 866). Barthélemy quotes a charterunder which "Robertus…beati Martini abbas…et comes" confirmeddonations to Tour Saint-Martin made "olim…ab Odone quondam comiteAurelianensi avunculo nostro et Willelmo eius filio" by charter dated20 Feb "anno XXVII regnante domino Carolo…rege"[132]. As noted above, this charter suggests that Guillaume must have been considerably olderthan his sister Ermentrudis (whose birth is estimated to [830], seebelow, and therefore possibly born from an otherwise unrecordedearlier marriage of his father. The Annales Bertiniani name"Willelmum…Odonis quondam comitis Aurelianensis filium" as"Karolus…sobrinum suum" when recording his capture in Burgundy andexecution at "Silvanectum civitatem" in 866[133]. Comte Eudes & his [first/second] wife had [one possible child]: b) [GEBHARD (-after 879). Jackman suggests that Gebhard(ancestor of the Konradiner) was the brother of Ermentrude, first wifeCharles II "le Chauve" King of the West Franks, therefore the son ofEudes Comte d'Orléans[134]. However, this appears chronologicallydubious if Gebhard is identified with "Gebehardus" who founded KlosterKettenbach, as recorded in the charter of "Ludowicus…rex" dated 31 Mar[845] in which the king donated land in "in pago Logonense iuxtafluvium Arda" to the monastery[135], unless he was born from anearlier marriage of his father. Nevertheless, an interesting possiblecorroboration for Gebhard's relationship with this family is providedby the Annales Bertiniani which record that "Adalardo Yrmintrudisreginæ avunculo" was "propinquo" of the brothers Udo (ancestor of theFranconian Konradiner family), Berengar and Waldo who were expelledfrom Germany in 865[136], and in a later passage that "Adalardo…etsuis propinquis Hugonis et Berengario" fought the Vikings in 865[137]."Adalardo" was Adalhard [III], maternal uncle of Gebhard assuming therelationship is as shown here, and the brothers Udo, Berengar andWaldo were Gebhard's sons. m --- [im Nordgau], sister of Graf ERNST,daughter of ---. The relationship between the sons of Gebhard andGraf Ernst is clarified by the Annales Bertiniani which record that"nepotes ipsius [Ernestus]" were expelled from the kingdom in861[138]. If the suggestion by Jackman concerning Gebhard'saffiliation is correct, Gebhard would have been the brother-in-law notbrother of Ernest, married to the latter's sister.] Comte Eudes & his [second] wife had one child: c) ERMENTRUDIS (27 Sep [830]-Saint-Denis 6 Oct 869, bur églisede l'abbaye royale de Saint-Denis). The Annales Bertiniani record themarriage in 842 of "Ermendrud neptem Adalardi comitis" and "Karolus"at "Carisiacum palatium"[139]. Nithard names "Hirmentrude, daughterof Odo and Ingiltrud" as wife of Charles[140]. She was crowned in Aug866 at Saint-Médard de Soissons. After she was separated from herhusband, she retired to a monastery. The Annales Bertiniani recordthe death "869 II Non Oct in monasterio Sancti Dyonisii" of"Hyrmentrudem uxorem suam [=Karoli]" and her burial atSaint-Denis[141]. The Obituaire de Notre-Dame de Paris records thedeath "Non Oct" of "Irmentrudis regina uxor Caroli"[142]. Thenecrology of the abbey of Saint-Denis records the death "Non Oct" of"Hirmentrudis regina"[143]. m (Quierzy, Aisne 13 Dec 842, separated867) as his first wife, CHARLES II “le Chauve” King of the WestFranks, son of Emperor LOUIS I "le Pieux" & his second wife Judith[Welf] (Frankfurt-am-Main 13 Jun 823-Avrieux or Brides-les-Bains,Savoie 6 Oct 877, bur Nantua Abbey, transferred to église de l'abbayeroyale de Saint-Denis).
