Highland News Leader, Tues 21 May 1940: Velmer J. Holzinger ofPierron, employed by Arthur Bellm of Highland as a driver of one ofthe trucks delivering beer from the Highland brewery was fatallyinjured just before noon Friday. He was returning from St. Louiswhere he had delivered a load of beer with his Ford truck loaded withempty beer cases. At the intersections of Rt 50 and 159 west toO'Fallon his truck collided with a car. When the truck struck the carit careened against a pole snapping it off and scattering the load ofcases and bottles at the corner of the intersection. The impact wasso severe that the body was ripped off the chassis of the truck, andthe car skidded a considerable distance down the highway. The deathof Mr. Holzinger was beyond question occured by the truck striking thepole. He was born on a farm 3 miles southwest of Pierron on 29 April1909 and was 31-0-18, son of the late Joseph Holzinger. Last Decemberhe married Adell Koch of Breese. He is survived by his wife, hismother, Catherine Holzinger, a brother Edgar of Highland and threesisters, Mrs. Linda Weindel of Highland, Misses Florence and Irene ofPierron. Buried in Calvary Cemetery, Pierron.
