The family thinks he arrived in Balto in 1898 from Bremen. The 1910 MD census gives arrival as 1903. Naturalization papers give 20 Mar 1903.
PARENTS: LEONA SCHMIDT said either the SCHMIDT or ROESLER families were from Essen, Ger. Family was from Bremen according to LILLIAN SCHMIDT as remembered by daughter GLORIA. LILLIAN also said that the family lived near Berlin and that her father refused to go to university, joined the navy and later jumped ship at Baltimore. All children were named for his sisters and brothers per LILLIAN.
TO USA: The 1910 MD census gives arrival as 1903. Naturalization papers give 20 Mar 1903 on SS "HANOVER". I have searched the manifest for the HANOVER in Mar 1902, Sep 1902, Jan 1903, Mar 1903 and the SS "CASSELL", Mar 1903 and the SS "KOLN" in Mar 1903 with no success.

6 Jun 1878- KARL HERMAN SCHMIDT was the 5th child born to HERMAN ROBERT & HENRIETTE FRIEDERIKE SCHMIDT (nee HENSEL) in their apartment at #8 Hohe Strasse, Gera, Thuringen, Germany. 18 Apr 1910- Life insurance agent, 31, rented 1622 E Clements St with wife FRANCES, 28, children HERMAN,4, ELSIE, 3 & LILLIAN, 9 months old. He to US in 1903, she in 1888, his naturalization papers filed. Three of four children living. (Mistake? LINA's baptism in 1905 is recorded and unless she died and another was born, the family always celebrated her 1905 birthday. In 1910 she was living with her aunt JESSE.) /C1910MD pg 1a ED 390 sht 1a

He was the Ass't Superintendent of an insurance agency living in Saunders Range, Anne Arundel, MD with wife FRANCES EVA, born 5 Oct 1881 at Mariendorf, Germany. His children, all living at home were LENA, born 15 Dec 1904, HERMAN, born 3 Feb 1906, LILLIAN, born 1 Jul 1909, ELSIE, born 23 Apr 1907, LEONA, born 5 Sep 1918 and KARL, born 25 Sep 1921. All children were born in Baltimore except HERMAN and ELSIE in Bethleham, PA. OTTO was born 6 Jun 1878 in Gera, [Thuringia,] Germany, left Bremerhaven 5 Mar 1903 on the SS "HANOVER" and arrived at Baltimore on 20 Mar 1903. Witnesses were FRANK WOLFRAM, tailor of Oakwood Station, MD and GEORGE P HIMMELHEBER, barber of 419 Forrest St. /DECLARATION OF INTENT & PETITION FOR NATURALIZATION
1926- Lived at Saunder's Range and worked as machinist with the US government. /FAMILY
Made and drank home brew with soldiers. A relative, SAURES (SAROWSKI) turned him in for making beer. /Ibid
28 Jun 1926- Arundel police came to house, a dispute evolved and he was shot to death by a deputy. /ANNE & LINA, DC
29 Jun 1926- JN M TAYLOR was the undertaker. He was buried at Cedar Hill, Sec DD row 13 grave 9./DC
