He hated his stepfather. He was angry with his uncle's family and left. He never contacted his mother or his uncle's family again. I was also told that Sam said that his mother was not Italian. She was Frenc He settled in Auburn Washington where he met my grandmother Grace Ulery. Her birth name was Grace Clark, but she was raised as Winifred Adams. She was divorced and the mother of three daughters. She owned her own home given to her by her foster parents. My mother was the middle daughter. Salvatore went by the name Sam. He worked as a truck driver. Sam and Grace had one son. He was born February 14, 1925. He was called Valentine. I found the family on the 1930 census for Washington State. My mother and her sisters are listed with the last name Dotolo which is wrong. Val is listed as Rudolph V Dotolo. Sam was listed as Samuel. It was always Salvatore or Sam to the family though. Grace died October 21, 1941. Sam died in 1949. After Grace died, Val and Sam didn't get along. Val Dotolo joined the Merchant Marines when he was 16 as a cabin boy. He was at Dutch harbor when the ships there were bombed by the Japanese. Later he shipped out as a cook. Valentine Dotolo was the father of three sons, George, William, and Stanley, and his wife was expecting another child when he was killed in 1964. The youngest son was born May 16, 1965. His name was Jeffrey Allen Dotolo, but he became Jeffrey Allen Combs when my husband and I adopted him in 1969. Val's second wife was Alta Combs. She was my husband's sister. Since I have been checking family records online I wanted to find out about the Dotolo family too for Jeff's sake. George was killed in an auto accident in 1975. William lives with his wife in the Los Angeles area.
