John Opp, son of John Opp and his legally married wife Christian born Schumacher, was born on 11 November 1882 in South Russia. He was baptized in the Lutheran Church by Pastor R. Schrenk and confirmed by Pastor Schilling. On 28 January 1908 he married his now deeply mourning wife, Katharina Haydt. This marriage was blessed with six children, of which three preceded their father to the heavenly home. In the year 1909 he came with his family to America and made a home on the John Strobel farm four miles northeast of Eureka. For fourteen years he lived with his family on his farm three miles south of Eureka, where he lived out his life. The deceased received an awakening to God in the year 1912 in the house of Fred Aman. He once said, ©ルSI think that was the most beautiful time of my life.©ルT Brother Opp was a peaceful, true and attentive member of St. Paul©ルus Church. He was beloved and served the church as a Vertwalter (deacon? administrator ) for many years. Also he was always prepared, attentive to the poor, borderline faithful, and weak members of the parish, in order to win them to the church. His last deed, before he suffered his stroke, was on Mission and Kindness Day. God, who sees all, was to him open to forgiveness. We will miss him. He died on 9 January around one in the afternoon, suddenly, of a stroke in the Eureka Hospital. His age was 59 years, one month and 29 days. He leaves behind his true and deeply mourning wife, two sons, John and Paul, and a daughter Anna now Mrs. Oskar Bauer, three uncles, three brothers, two sisters and many relatives and friends. May all mourners meet with the deceased in the here after. Funeral text: Matthew 24,44. Eureka, SD R. Knaus, pastor. From Der Kirchenbote, 1939
