Alexander CAMERON (MCNEIL)

Notizen zu dieser Person

Generally known as 'Pretty Polly'. Said to have been very bossy (a bitof a harridan). Was using crutches for many years according to LionelOrchard. Police Gazette 1898: There was a notice from Kaiapoi where Mary Bockman was the complainantcharging Alexander CAMERON with failure to maintain his illegitimatechild from 5 Sept1897 - 1 November 1898. Alexander had been born about 1868, was Scottish, a labourer, smallmoustache, 5'9" or 5'10", dark grey eyes, medium build, faircomplexion, dark hair, wearing a grey suit on weekdays and a dark oneon Sundays. He ha a married sister named Elizabeth Anderson inKaiapoi, and another sister named mcKay at Hanmer Plains. He had gone to Hastings with Mary and lived as man and wife, but heleft Mary before the baby's birth, and went to Rockville where RoseDykes was teaching and changed his name to McNeill. It appears AA Cameron (Alexander) may have changed his name to McNeillwithin a few days of his marriage. Fred was born in Hastings, and the informant of his birth on his birthcertifiacte was G.H. Orchard. Occupation: Miner/Farmer Nothing definite is known of AA (as he was known by his family) fromthe time he left the Otepopo School on 16 August 1881 aged 14, untilhe appears in the Police Gazette in 1898 - Kaiapoi: Alexander Cameron is charged on a warrant of apprehensionwith failing to provide for the maintenance of his illegitimate childbetween 5 September 1897 and 1 November 1898. Description: Scotch,a labourer, 30 years of age, 5ft 9" or 10" high, medium build, darkgrey eyes, regular features, fair complexion, dark hair, shaved exceptfor a small dark moustache. Usually wears a grey suit on weekdays anda dark one on Sundays. Has a married sister named Anderson (a widow)at Kaiapoi and another named McKay at Hanmer Plains. He was lastheard of at Hastings during October 1898. Complainant: MaryBockman, Ohoko. It appears AA was living in Kaiapoi when he met Mary Bockman, probablyboarding with his sister Elizabeth Anderson. Elizabeth was eitherseparated or divorced from her husband James Stark Anderson. It seems that when Mary became pregnant, she and AA went to Hastingsto avoid a local scandal and probably lived as man and wife until justbefore the baby was born when AA deserted her, leaving her to fend forboth herself and the baby, a boy she named Fredrick Jochim Bockman.Alexander fled to Rockville where Rose Dykes was teaching and became aMcNeil on the way. The fate of Mary Bockman and her son is unknown. Possibly she marriedand someone else had assumed responsibility for her and her son. Rose became pregnant and she and AA were married on 3 February 1902across Cook Strait in Wanganui where Rose's family were living. However three days later they remarried as Mr and Mrs Cameron, accounting for the existence of two marriage certificates - one in thename of McNeil and the other Cameron.
