Richard (Dick) J. Schmich Sr., age 100, passed away peacefully at Sunset House on 03/15/2016. He was born to John and Mary Schmich in Cincinnati, Ohio on June 26, 1915. Richard graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s College of Pharmacy. He began his career as a pharmacist in Cincinnati where he met Mary Bernath, to whom he was married for 73 years. He was a Staff Sargent during WW II serving as an army Medic where he earned three bronze stars in the Philippines. After the war, he and Mary raised their family in Toledo where Mary was originally from. As an only child, he enjoyed being part of the large Bernath clan as Mary had 11 living siblings. He worked over 40 years as a pharmacist, retiring in 1985 from Lanes Drug Stores. During his retirement he enjoyed golfing and playing cards with his family and friends, many of whom he met as a member of Conn-Wiesenberger American Legion Post 587 and the Elks Lodge No. 53. Richard lived the past several years at Sunset House in Toledo. The family would like to acknowledge the wonderful staffs at Sunset and Ashanti Hospice for the loving care they had given him. He touched everyone he knew with his humble and kind ways. He is survived by his wife, Mary; Children, John Debbie) Schmich , Marcy Schmich, Sandra (Tim) Mennitt, Frank (Barb) Schmich and Blane (Susi) Schmich; Grandchildren, Tim (Emily) Mennitt, Army Officer CW3 Brandon Schmich, Lindsay (Tim) Villa, Allison (Brad) Schrecongost, Mandy Schmich, Paul Schmich, Angela (Larry) King, Blane Schmich Jr, Brenton (Krystal) Schmich and Kylee Schmich; Great-grandchildren, Kaitlin & Camden Schmich, Kendall, Tristan, Nolan & Ellerie King, Jillian, Lola & Laila Villa, Norah & Dane Mennitt, Austin Schmich and Zoe Schrecongost. He was preceded in death by his parents and grandson, Brodie Schmich.
