[Margaretha SPRUEGEL.ftw] Never Married Raised Madonna Lilies. Mildred was 5'1" tall and never weighed over 95 pounds and sheresembled the Darr's. Mildred was very sickly when she was small and her parents alwayssaidthey thought it was why she was so petite. Mildred attended Grade School at the Jamestown School, and thenherparents moved into the house that belonged to William A. Darr as he wasnowmarried again and moved where his new wife lived on Main St, so EdwinDarrpurchased the house from William. Mildred attended High School in Fremont,Indianawhere both Edwin and William Darr were residing. After High School Mildred went to Fort Wayne and worked atGeneralElectric until she saved enough money to get her thriugh college as she wantedtobe a Teacher. She went to Ypsilanti State Normal (Now Eastern University) andrecievedher degree for teaching, thenreturned to Fremont and lived at home.Shetaught one year at the Stokes School about 4 miles North and West of Fremont.Shewas so small that the boys made lots of trouble for her. So she went backtoYpsilanti and took up nursing ,working there at Ypsilanti State Hospital (Mental Hospital) nursing from 1931until 1940 when she decided to get outandmove to Jackson, Michigan with Ruby (McNall) Sauer sharing an apartmenttogether where they had Emma (Bordner) Darr (Mildred's mother) stay with theminthe Winter and then they would take her back to Fremont, Indiana, USA inthespring. During the war (World War II) Mildred and Ruby worked in factories,Ruby having worked their since Feb. of 1935 had no trouble getting Mildredon. When the War was over Mildred was laid off as she didn't haveenoughseniority to stay on. By this time Ruby had gotten married and Mildred andhermother (Emma) had an apartment together until Emma'shealth got so bad shewanted to go back to her home in Fremont, so Mildred went back with herandstayed until her mother passed away on 21 FEB 1945, then the house inFremontwent to the three girls, Belva, Elva, and Mildred. So Aunt Elva andUncleGrover Collins purchased the house and gave Mildred her thirdand Belva's five children got the other third. So Mildred moved back to Jackson, Michigan and bought a four roomhouse, 3 miles south and west of Spring Arbor and lived there until ElvaandGrover Collins passed away. Their son, Dale Collins wanted Mildred to movebackto Fremont, Indiana, USA and watch over the house. He kept up repairs andMildred had it rent free, and thats were she lived until she passed away, afterwhich Dale Collins sold the house. Mildred wasa lovely person to be around. She did for her parents, hersisters and their children. She loved to play cards and no one liked theoutdoors any better than she did. She could tell you every kind of tree, bird, flower or weed around. From the Madonna Lilies she raised she sold bulbs and seeds to theIsabel Seed Company in Jackson, Michigan. She loved to read and not the trashy books, she was just awonderfulperson. She and Ruby Sauer liked Baseball games and saw quite a lot of themand listened to the ones they could not get to. Mildredhad gone back to Nursing and was night supervisor at Jackson Ostropathic Hospital for five years, then she worked as a nurseforSisters of Mercy Hospital until Aunt Elva was taken sick, then she quit andwent back to Fremont, Indiana, USA to care for her which was a little overa year before Elva passed away. ThenMildred returned again to Jackson,Michigan and went to work for the State atJackson County Sanitorium nursingagain. Mildred liked taken care of the sickand how a person as small as shewascould handle some of the patients, I'll never know. When they closedtheHospital down, Mildred retired and worked in her yard, the house, read anddidloads of needlework, crocheting, and knitting and helping anyone she could.
