Discharged in Baltimore, Maryland 11 September 1865. Widow recievedCivil War Pension #537705 Cause of Death was Chronic Diarrhea contracted in the line of dutywhileserving in the Civil War at Stevensons Station in West Virginiain July1865. He died at 7:00 A.M. Had blue eyes, light hair, light complexion per military record Was 5 feet 5 inches tall per military records. During the Civil War William took part in no battles as hisservicesconsisted mostly of scouting, skirmishing, guard and garrison duty recievinganHonor- able Discharge. After the war he moved to Fremont, Steuben, Indiana, USA as a Farmer. During the Darr/Livensperger Reunion in September 1912, Williamgavethis eloquent address which is copied here in its entirety: "My friends, as we aregathered here today beneath the trees, I imagineapicture painted by some renowed artist, in which he has paintedthelikeness of this grove before us. He has sketched in also thesetreeswith great skill and care, and he has caught something of thebeautifulcolor that is so charming to us. Likewise, in the picture Isee, surmounting the grove a heaven of deepest blue, with the prettiestoflittle summer clouds floating in its depths. It is a beautifulpicture, andbrings to our imagination the very smell of the woods. Theartist'sgenius andtraining have rendered us all that a picture canbring us ofthis beautiful grove. But as we step from the picture intothe groveitself; as the breeze that so lightly tosses the branches andleaves, brushes against our cheeks; as we think of the massive rootssunk deepinto the earth, and of the sap that they send like life-bloodup throughthe trunks and out into the tiniest twig, giving life andbeauty; as weconsider these thigs, I say, we know that there issomething in the realgrove that is lacking in the picture grove. Thatthing is the swelling, bursting life that the great maker of all thingshas sent singing throughthe veins of the trees, and the mosses, andthe grasses. But now I will persuade this distinguished artist to go with me to myownlittle home, and spread his easel where my old east chair stands onalittle side porch, looking out over my flower garden. He selects forthesubject of his canvas a stalk of tiger-lilies, drooping gracefullyin thefull blush of their ripeness. Yonder a hummingbird hovers neartheopening of the blossom, catching its sweet fragrance. A flash ofyellow, and a bee has lost himself in the depths of the blossom, searching outits hidden sweets for his honey-store. Our artist catchesthe flower- howgracefully he spreads it upon his canvas. His colorsare rich and warm, and we seem almost to catch the lily's fragrance, but there is adifference between the lily that the man has painted andthe lily thatGod made. I hear the echo of some old, old words,"Solomon in all hisglory was not arrayed like one of these." Thedifference between thecanvas lily and God's lily is the differencebetween life and not-life. Now our artist's ideas rise to a still higher plane. he essays aportraitof man himself. Perhaps he is painting the picture of yourbrother orsister, or mine. What beauty he pours into his lines. Howdelicately hecopies the tints of flesh, until we can almost feel thethrob of redblood beneath it. Those eyes are familiar; the mouth wearsa droop wereadilyrecognize; there is the faintest tip of the shouldersthat strikesa hidden spring of our emotions. What a noble look beamsfrom thefore-head, and the eyes, and the firm chin. But the eyes do notbehold us;nor do we hear the loving tones from the lips in thepicture. As we gazeat the painted image, there comes an inexpressiblelonging for a clasp ofthe dear hand again; the friendly flashof theeye; the hearty tone ofgreeting. And her
