Bernhard Brockmann 1837-1916
At the advanced age of 79 years, Mr. Bernhard Brockmann, one of the most famous pioneers from the mighty German empire, passed over into eternity, on the 27thof April, 1916 at his home No 615 Prospect Place. He is morned by his family and also by the many friends which he has won throughout the years because of his outstanding character. The deceased was the proprietor of the Brockmann Harness Co. on East Pearl Street, and had worked in the saddlery business for 55 years. He leaves his grieving widow, four daughters (Mrs. Harry F. Trane, Mrs. William LeSaint, Mrs. Paul A. Gisiger{Gosiger}, and Sister Berchmans Mary, F.N.D, from Summit in Walnut Hills); and two sons, the Rev. Hubert S. Brockmann, the assistant editor of Queens Work, and the Rev. Harry Brockmann, both of whom live in St. Louis. He is also morned by one sister, the honorable Mother Olivia, the Mother Superior of the Franciscan sisters in Oldenburg, Indiana. Many Catholic organizations have lost a long-time loyal member, including theGerman Pioneers.

The funeral took place on the 1st of May, atm St. Andrew's Church in Avondale. The graveside service followed at St. Mary's Cemetary. Brockmann, having been a Pioneer Society member since 1877,
was accorded final honors by members Anton Schern, Jos. Vonderhaar,
Peter Kessler and Severin Schwarotz.

on Friday, caused sincere sorrow among his numerous friends in this vacinity. Mr. Brockmann was
a prominent figure in Catholic circles, being an active worker in many charitable and fraternal organizations of the city. He was a man of unassuming character and a devout Catholic. His friends were legion. He gave three

Family oral history:
Made a lot of money selling saddlery to the Union during the Civil War. Left an estate worth more than $500,000 in 1924. Bought his way out of the fighting for $500.
