1. Obituary copied from the 20 Sep 1929 Salisbury Press Spectator:
"J.W. GRIZZELL DIED SUDDENLY THURSDAY
President of the Peoples Bank for Past Twenty Years, Succumbs to Stroke
of Apoplexy.
J.W. Grizzell, prominent banker of this city, died at his home last
Thursday afternoon, sometime before 6 o'clock. Mr. Grizzell took
suddenly ill about six weeks ago, and for a few days was in a serious
condition, but he rallied and gained strength, and again resumed his
duties at the bank. Thursday, he did not feel as well as usual and
remained home, Mrs. Grizzell, who assists at the bank, however, going
to her work, as usual. Shortly before 6 Mrs. Thos. Adams, went to the
Grizzell home to take Mr. Grizzell some food for his supper and found
him lying in bed, a fatal stroke of apoplexy having claimed his life.
John William Grizzell, was a son of Mr. and Mrs. T.N. Grizzell,
pioneer settlers of Randolph County. He was born on a farm near
Randolph Springs, April 1, 1872. His early education was received at
the Burton school, four miles east of Salisbury, and he later attended
and in 1892, graduated from the North Missouri Institute in this city.
After the completion of his education, Mr. Grizzell taught school in
various rural schools in Chariton County for ten years, after which he
served an unexpired term as constable and collector of Salisbury
township. He then made the race for the office and was re-elected.
In 1905, the voters of Chariton County honored Mr. Grizzell by
choosing him as county treasurer. He served in this capacity for two
2 year terms.
After completing this work, Mr. Grizzell moved back to Salisbury and
entered the Peoples Bank as cashier, which position he held until he
accepted the presidency of the institution. He has been connected with
the bank the past twenty years.
In 1895, Mr. Grizzell was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth
Brockman. Two children, T.N. Grizzell, who now resides in New Orleans
and Mrs. G.C. Taylor, now of Los Angeles, Cal., were born to them.
At an early age Mr. Grizzell was converted and joined the Baptist
church at Clifton Hill. He always took a prominent part in the work of
the church and while serving as county treasurer, was ordained a deacon
of the Keytesville Baptist Church. On returning to Salisbury, he was
made a deacon of the local Baptist church, and for a number of years
previous to his death, served as chairman of the Board of Deacons.
Mr. Grizzell was a member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, and for many years
took a keen interest in the work of the order, and served through the
various chairs of the local lodge.
Besides the wife and two children, Mr. Grizzell is survived by his
aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. T.N. Grizzell of Clifton Hill; and four
sisters, Mrs. Albert Burton and Mrs. Ray McAdams of Clifton Hill; Mrs.
Robert Brockman of Kansas City; and Miss Sarah Grizzell of Fowler, Colo.
Funeral services were conducted at the Baptist church, Monday
afternoon, at 2:30, before a large assemblage of sorrowing relatives
and friends. Rev. A.H. Fuhr, former pastor here, and Rev. C.E. Griswold,
present pastor were in charge of the services. Mrs. G.C. Taylor, the
daughter, rendered a beautiful violin solo, carrying out the request of
her father. The active pall bearers were: W.R. Tindall, Gilbert Lamb,
A.S. Rucker, J.L. Ritzenthaler, P.F. Staats and French Mason. Honorary
pall bearers were: Geo. Walker, Joe Ingram, W.E. Sutter, D.T. Blake,
W.R. Sweeney, E.O. Snyder, A. Butler, R.C. Boeger and Josh Hunker.
Burial was in the City Cemetery.
To some, "Bill" Grizzell was a former school teacher; to others he was
a former county officer; but to the great majority of those who mourned
at his bier, he was a banker, friend and confident. As a banker his
counsel and advice was sought by many. In our dealings with him as a
banker, we always found him ready and anxious to lend a helping hand,
and temper the cold, hard rules of the business world with the
admonition of the Savior "whatsoever ye would that men should do unto
you, do you even so to them."
