The efficient and well-known engineer of the Moline water works, is a native son of Germany . He was born in Holstein , January 9, 1853 , his parents being Henry and Helena Brockman in Lage. His father, who was born February 21, 1828 , is still living, but. the, mother died many years ago, Our subject was reared in a country town, where he attended school until sixteen years of age, after which he began learning the carpenter's trade under the direction of his father, with whom he worked for four years. He then bade adieu to friends and native land and sailed from Hamburg on a vessel which eleven days later dropped anchor in the harbor of New York .
Mr. Lage soon afterward came to Moline and entered upon his business career here at carpenter work, but soon accepted a position as millwright in a paper factory, where he remained twelve years. He severed that connection in order to become engineer at the Moline water works, where he has remained eleven years. His faithful performance of every duty, his thorough understanding of his work and his promptness in its discharge has made him a most trusted employe of the city and won him the regard of all with whom he has corne in contact.
Mr. Lage was happily married April 27, 1872 , to Miss Johanna Rolfs, a native of Holstein , Germany , who had been one of his friends in youth and who crossed the Atlantic in the same vessel in which he made the voyage. They were married soon after their arrival in Moline and their union has been blessed with five children—Augusta, born September 5, 1872; Minnie, who was born June 12, 1876, and is the wife of Frank Michael, of Davenport, by whom she has one child, Karl; Henry, born March 20, 1878; Tina, born January 23, 1880; and Karl, born June 18, 1890.
Mr. Lage voted for Garfield in 1880, supported Cleveland in 1884, and Bryan in 1896, It will thus be seen that he is a man of independent views who exercises his right of franchise as he sees fit. He is a member of Camp No. 38, M, W. A., and his sterling worth and true manly qualities have won him the esteem of his brethren of the fraternity.
In the spring of 1889 Mr. Lage erected a large two-story building at 132 Fourth avenue , for business purposes and residence, and has placed therein a stock of dry goods and notions, the store being conducted by his wife and daughters.
