SONORA — George William Brockman, 89, passed away Sunday, June 23, 2002, at his residence in Sonora. Memorial service will be at 10:30 am. Wednesday, June 26, at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Sonora with the Rev. Monte Jones officiating. George William Brockman Jr. was born in San Angelo to Sophie VanderStucken Brockman and George Brockman Sr. on July 24, 1912. He attended public school in San Angelo graduating from Central High School. In 1931, he began college at Texas A&M University, graduating from there in 1935. He was a member of the Corp of Cadets, Company B of the 1st Battalion Infantry who adopted the original Reveille that would become the mascot of Texas A&M University. George worked for the Agriculture Adjustment Act (AAA) in Perryton, Texas. In 1936, he came to Sutton County to begin ranching, taking out time to serve his country in World War II as a lieutenant in the Army Air Corp. On Jan. 6, 1948, he married Mary Louise Craven in San Angelo and he continued ranching endeavors. He was an early active conservationist continuing to encourage and promote soil stewardship. George was both generous and supportive of many organizations throughout his life. He served on the board of the Edward’s Plateau Soil Water Conservation District and the Sutton County Underground Water District. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church having served on the vestry. He served on the Concho Valley Council of the Boy Scout’s of America and received the Silver Beaver Award for his services. He was a member of the Sonora Lion’s Club for more than fifty years. He was a strong supporter of the Sutton County 4-H programs. George was a member of the 12th Man Foundation of Texas A&M University and was an avid Aggie supporter. His enjoyment came from his grandchildren and their activities in Sonora: hunting, fishing and being at the ranch. Nothing pleased him more than a lengthy visit with his friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Brockman in 1992. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Bob and Nancy Brockman, of Sonora; grandchildren, Ashley Brockman, a senior at Texas A&M and Landon Brockman, a senior at Sonora High School. Memorials may be made to Sutton County Civic Center or any favorite charity.
