Birth: 1540, Germany Death: 1628, Germany Dietrich "Theodor" Krekel or Kreckel was born in 1540 in Wilsenroth, Nassau, Germany. Around 1565, he married Margarethe Weller, said to be an heiress and descendant of Diele von Berzahn & his wife Kathringen. This may have been a source of the family wealth that permitted Theodor & Margarethe to educate their sons. From 1577 to 1628, Theodor was Cantor at St. Severus Stiftskirche in Gemünden near Westerburg (then in Nassau, but since World War II in Rheinland/Pfalz), and was an instructor there at the Institute of St. Severus beginning in 1583. During the Reformation, the institute became Evangelical Lutheran, and so did the instructor. Theodor is probably the one who Latinized the family name by adding the ius. During the next two generations, the K was changed to C, giving the Crecelius name now used by most of the descendants; although there are still Krekeliuses and Krekels in Germany. He died and was buried in Gemünden in September 1628; he was 88. The year after his death, his widow Margarethe was convicted of witchcraft and beheaded. They had the following children: 1. Dietrich. 2. Andreas. 3. Justus ("Jodocus"). Born 1565/1570, Justus was a Lutheran pastor in Mensfelden from 1602 until his death on 20 Apr 1616, whereupon his brother Christian, our ancestor, succeeded him as pastor of Mensfelden. 4. I do realize that Theodor was born a Krekel or Kreckel, and that Krecelius was the spelling for several generations after him.
