Wulf Thedel Albrecht Doerry, 85, Manhattan KS, passed away August 2, 2014, at Via Christi Village after a long illness. He was born on December 29, 1928 in Marienburg, Germany (now Malbork, Poland) to Albrecht and Erna (Penner) Doerry. In his early years, he lived in Marienburg, Lauenburg, and Gollnow. In the summer of 1944 his high school education in Germany essentially ended when he was assigned to a working party for building fortifications to defend against the advancing Russian army. In February 1945 he was drafted into the German army at age 16 and was captured by the British army on May 3, 1945 at Hohen Viecheln, Mecklenburg after his unit successfully evaded capture by the Russians. Following his release as a POW in late June 1945, he reunited with his parents near Uelzen, in the British sector. He then worked on farms until he immigrated to the United States in 1951. Once in the United States, he worked initially on a farm in Iowa before taking on an entry level position at Peterson Baking Company in Omaha, Nebraska. In 1953 he was drafted into the U.S. Army. As a soldier, he gained his U.S. citizenship and passed the GED to earn his high school equivalency. Upon his honorable discharge in 1955, he returned to Omaha where he soon welcomed the arrival of Edith Penner from Germany with whom he had corresponded extensively for several years. Edith and Wulf married on August 27, 1955 in Omaha. In 1956 Wulf and Edith moved to Chicago where Wulf completed a 20 week course at the American Institute of Baking (AIB) funded by the GI Bill. Following graduation, Wulf started his career in baking research and development as a technician for the research bakery of Swift and Company in Chicago. His research baking career would take him to Awrey Bakeries and Polly Anna Pastry Kitchen in Michigan, Interstate Brands Corporation in Kansas City, and finally back to AIB, now in Manhattan, Kansas. While in Michigan, Wulf earned a B.A. in Chemistry from Wayne State University. His career culminated as the director of the Cereal Technology Research Group at AIB from which he retired in 1999. While with AIB, Wulf authored three books on baking technology, travelled worldwide, and received the Louis Gardner award. He was a dedicated member of the American Society of Bakery Engineers (now American Society of Baking). After retirement, Wulf could often be found volunteering his time to Manhattan’s Sunset Zoo. In addition, Wulf enjoyed traveling, gardening, coin and stamp collecting, woodworking, and corresponding with his many relatives and friends. In addition to two brothers and three sisters, Wulf is survived by his wife, Edith of Manhattan, KS; children: son Dr. Armin (Charla) Doerry of Albuquerque, NM; daughter Dr. Karen Doerry of Warrensburg, MO; daughter Hilda (Claude) Biselx of Sensine, Switzerland; and son Dr. Norbert (Liz) Doerry of Burke, VA; ten grandchildren: Dr. Nicole (Scott) Spaulding, Crystal (Philip Londo) Doerry, and Alex (Magdalena) Doerry; Landon Demel; Michael, Joseph, John, and Myriam Biselx; and Grace and Nick Doerry; and two great-grandchildren: Colt Doerry, and Taylor Spaulding. A celebration of Wulf’s life will be held on Saturday, August 23, 2014, at Yorgensen-Meloan-Londeen Funeral Home beginning 10:30 AM. Following the celebration, his ashes will be spread on the Konza Prairie. | |
