Schroeter Otto obituary in New York Times, 13 August 1957 OTTO SCHROETER, ENGINEER, WAS 76 Aide at Panama Canal Dies - Entomologist Was Colonel in Connecticut Guard NEW LONDON, Conn., Aug. 12 (AP) - Otto Henry Schroeter of Waterford, engineer and entomologist, died today at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital here. His age was 76. As an engineer in Government service, he worked on the Panama Canal. Prior to that he did extensive work for private concerns, which included helping build levees along the Mississippi River in Louisiana, and breakwaters and bridges along the East Coast. While working on the Panama Canal, Mr. Schroeter became interested in entomology. His knowledge of the subject led to participation in an expedition to Haiti in 1933, during which he collected specimens for Yale University and the American Museum of Natural History, among others. He also was active in the Connecticut National Guard and was commanding officer of the 192d Field Artillery from 1935 to 1940. He attained the rank of colonel. Mr. Schroeter was a native of Germany. He came to this country as a boy, but later returned to Germany for his education. Survivors include his widow, the former Miss Lucy Douglas of New London, and three brothers, all of Germany. Had 'Moth Farm' Living in retirement in recent years at Quaker Hill, Conn., Mr. Schroeter spent his home breeding moths. At his "moth farm" four miles north of New London he had a row of outdoor cages in which he raised such unusual specimens as the Attacus Edwardsi (Indian moth), which have attained a wingspread of 11 inches. The moths, native of India, are among the world's largest. He supplied moths and cocoons to Harvard and Yale Universities and the Rockefeller Institute, for research purposes. The larvae of his moths were confined to his cages and thus unable to spread and cause agricultural damage. He gave more than 2,500 mounted moth specimens to the University of Connecticut.
