BIOGRAPHIE: For March 6, 2008 BARTELS RETIREMENT COMMUNITY NEWS Pastor Keith Tomlinson, Chaplain "A word of welcome to four new women" New residents: Grace Leistikow has been a woman with busy hands! "I've made so many things," she says. One of those things, that she's so very proud of, is the beautiful and colorful quilt that she painted that covers her bed at Bartels. Each of the 20 large squares of white cloth was painted very carefully by Grace, using tubes of special fabric paint, with a large yellow/gold rose in the center of each square surrounded by green leaves, and small blue flowers. Stitched together with strips and small squares of pale green and golden yellow cloth (the sewing and quilting were done by someone else), the bright quilt is a testament to Grace's creativity and talent. She also made two pillows with the same pattern. Grace came to Bartels on February 9 from the Shell Rock Care Center. She's in Woodland Terrace room 110. Here she can be closer to her husband Emil who came to us from The Meadows in Shell Rock last July and lives now in our Evergreen Arbor. Grace and Emil appreciate being able to see each other every day and having some of their meals together at Emil's table in Sheltered Care. Born at Oran, Grace was the eighth of the 11 children of August and Sylvia (Miller) Westendorf. They later moved to a farm northeast of Oelwein where Grace completed the eighth grade in country school and then worked for several years as a "hired girl" for many area families. In 1935 Grace married John Albrecht. Jack was a farmer from Sumner. They had met at a dance at the Coliseum, a dance hall in Oelwein that attracted lots of big bands, including the Lawrence Welk orchestra. Grace and Jack lived and worked on a couple of farms in the Sumner area before moving to Readlyn when they settled on a farm east of town. They retired from farming in 1978. Jack died in 1986, and after being alone for six and a half years, Grace married Emil Leistikow on September 24, 1992. He was an old friend, Grace says. The two couples, the Albrechts and the Leistikows, had traveled together for many years before Grace's husband and Emil's wife died. Living in Grace's home in Readlyn, Grace and Emil continued to do lots of traveling, spending the winters in Mission, Texas, and enjoying trips to Florida. That's the setting for one of Grace's favorite stories – about how she called the Coast Guard to rescue Emil when it seemed that he'd been gone on the water too long and his small boat had washed out to sea. Grace's busy hands worked hard in her big garden, her strawberry bed and raspberry patch, and she did lots of crocheting. Her buffet at home is "full of lots of stuff," she says – doilies, table cloths and other things that she's made. Grace is a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Readlyn where she's been active with the church women. Her family of five children includes Darrell at New Hampton, James at Anamosa, Charles on the farm at Readlyn where she and Jack lived, Dennis at New Hampton, and Carolyn Upham in Wisconsin. The newspaper story about her 90th birthday, which was last November, said that Grace has 20 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren. "That sounds about right!" Grace says of her big family. Her step-family includes Emil's five children and their families. Welcome, Grace! We're glad to have you with us. (Albrecht) Leistikow Showing 1 - 6 of 6 entries. - I have so many things running through my mind, that there is no way i can sum up my feelings in a scant 1000 characters. I think we were all blessed to have Grace with us. I am glad my children got to know her, and knew who she was. We should all be so lucky to have 90 years on Earth, live long enough to have such a brood of grandchildren and great grandchildren. Grace was able to see all of her children retire and have successful lives. SHe was able to see a grandchild retire. She attended almost all of our weddings, and there wasn't a week that went by that i don't think back to spending time on the farm, playing on the bus, swinging from an old tire. My life is much better. God Bless the family. I am sorry i was unable to attend. We will all meet again soon. Thanks for sharing your last years with Grandpa - you made him very happy. tammy Hegel Oct 24, 2008 federal way, WA - Grandma I love you very much! Last night as I snuggled under the quilt that you made me (as I do most nights) I dreamed about all the happy times and about your house always filled with laughter and fun when we would visit. And I got thinking about all those silly glasses(The Muppets, The Smurfs ect..) we filled your cabinets with that we would pick up at Mcdonalds, Arby's, Hardees.... on the way to your house, and to know that you kept them for all those years brings a smile to my face.I also got thinking about how you always play Uno with us. I have so many more memories all that will live on and on in my heart, I'm going to miss you. I know you are in heaven shining your light and smile down upon us and your love will live on in us.
