One of Uriah's obituaries reads: URIAH C. KING DEAD, died last night at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Melv in Rowe, of 392 Clinton avenue, Albany. Death was caused by Bright's dise ase. The deceased was born in Hartford, Connecticut, Dec 24, 1845. Forty- five years ago he came to Rensselaer from Utica to accept a position wi th the New York Central railroad. Conscientious labor caused him to ri se rapidly and after years of labor was advanced to general foreman of t he car repairing department of the company for the eastern section of t he Mohawk division. His headquarters were at Troy and he had jurisdicti on over Troy, Rensselaer, Schenectady, Amsterdam and Fonda. Had he liv ed another year he would have been retired on a pension. He was married t wice. His first wife was Miss Mary C. Lee, of Utica, a relative of Gener al Robert E. Lee, commander-in-chief of the Confederate army. Ten childr en was the result of the union, seven of which survive. They are: Walte r, Nelson, Thomas, and Harry King and Mrs. Melvin Rowe, Mrs. William Goe tz and Mrs. Bernard Farrell. Some time after the death of his first wi fe he married Mrs. Anna L. Cregan, who died last year. Charitably incline d, Mr. King was loved by all who knew him. Members of Greenbush Lodge, N o. 337, F. and A. M., of which the deceased was a charter member, will att end his funeral Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the home of his daughte r. Burial will be in the Greenbush cemetery. Undertaker R. A. Dandaraw w ill have charge. When Uriah C. King died, Hannah S. Rudge-King placed Uriah Jr. in an orphanage in Hartford. When she married George Wadsworth, they must have retrieved Uriah Jr. from the orphanage and brought him to live with them in Oneida County, NY. I believe that George treated Uriah Jr. with kindness and as one of his own. As you know, Uriah Jr. named one of his daughters Elizabeth Wadsworth King. Uriah Jr. had a big job with the New York Central Railroad. He paid homage to his time in an orphanage by serving on the board of directors of the local orphanage where he lived in Rensselaer, NY. It would be interesting to know how Hannah Rudge and George Wadsworth came to know each other. Do you have any info/thoughts on this? I know Wadsworth is a very prominent name in Hartford, CT and the Rudge’s lived in/near Hartford.
