Samuel Smith, his wife, Hannah, and their nine children, in removal to Vermont in 1767, journeyed by "Jersey Wagon" and yoke of oxen to Skeensboro (then), now Whitehall, N.Y., at the head of Lake Champlain. There were no roads North beyond that point, so they were obliged to dispose of their oxen, shipped their effects on board a batteau, and sailed down the lake and landed at some point within the present limits of the town of Pauton, where they built a log cabin. Samuel was not of robust constitution and was thus limited to his trade of shoemaker. They were always indigent. In 1770 they were driven from their cabin by the British and Indians and the cabin was burned. They had a new cabin in Bridport in 1773. They were in the crossfire of the quarrel between the government of the colony of New York and the "Hampshire Grant' men, which they weathered until news of the approach of Major Carlton of the British Army and his destructive band. Again they had to leave with what they could carry. and their house was burned. They made their way through the forest to the stockade fort at Pittsford. Two sons, Nathan and Marshall, now in their 20's, remained behind, however, in the desolation that ensued, until 1784 when they again reoccupied the former location of the family. They married, built houses and invited their father and mother to reside with them until death.
