William R. Sprague, d. Yes, date unknown # * "Sprague Familiies in America", by Dr. Warren Vincent Sprague, page 198. James Sprague was a farmer. At the opening of the Revolutionary war he was fifteen years of age, and at that time came with his parents to Smithfield, RI from Nova Scotia. He enlisted as a private, Nov 1, 1776, and served three years in Capt. Eli Leavenworth's Co. in col. Meigs' Regt. of the Connecticut line. The History of Berkshire Co., Massachussets says he was a resident of Adams, Massachussets fro 1785 to 1790. About 1794 he, with his wife Mary and five children, departed from their home (which tradition says was in Connecticut) to find another in Ohio. While proceeding with their wagons, winter set in quite severely, and by the time the Allegheny mountains were reached Mrs. Sprague became so ill that it was decided to wait until spring before going farther. Mrs. Sprague died here. When spring came, the children, including Lydia and her husband, resumed the journey and settled at Otsego, OH. Phebe lived with her sister Lydia until her marriage. Mr. Sprague remained in Pennsylvania until after 1800, having married there. He then removed to Washington Co., OH and in 1802 located at Wakotomica. In 1807, he and his son Samuel were pushing a conoe up the Muskingum river and when nearing the mouth of Wills Creek, saw an Indian encampment and putting in to shore and old Indian offered to show them a good salt spring for $1,400. The offer was not accepted and shortly after the Indian showed it to a Mr. Mapes for a rifle. In 1812 he with his sons Samuel, Jonathan and Elijah, cut a road from Symmes Creek to White Eyes Creek and to the Indian Village that occupied the same site now occupied by the village of Otsego, Muskingum Co., and moved there in May of that year, bringing the first wagon that was ever in Monroe Township. They planted corn on the site of the deserted village but it did not ripen on account of the early frost and they were obliged to procure corn from Wakotomica for the first year's provision. His first house was on the north-west quarter of section thirteen and was raised by himself and family. At that time there was no land entered within the bounds of Monroe. On May 25, 1818, he made application for a pension, which was allowed. He was also to receive a grant of bounbty land located in the Refugee tract. James and Susanna were members of Pleasant Valley Methodist Protestant Church, which was organized in 1828-9. From Helen Gibson, correspondent. APPLICATIONS FOR GRANTS The following is a list of applications for grants at the years named. Many of the applicants were never in the country, others came and returned to the colonies south. The list is of interest to show the land grabbing tendencies of the age. 1774 Barnes, Thomas & Others ) Brown, Wm. & Others ) 12250 Bennett, Joseph and Jonas, Jr. & Others ) Read, Joseph & Simon Rodgers, Samuel Williams, Peleg & Others ) Waterman, Andrew & Others ) 12250 Willber, Benj. & Others ) Maxwell, Wm.
