She went into labor and the prematurebaby girl was born, but Loretta died. The baby weighed just over twopounds. Emma Valentine was living in Tenn. with her two youngest children,Pearl 16 and Ressie 12. she closed her house and brought her daughters toLittle Cataloochee, with Claude and his daughters. Emma Wore long dresses and aprons. She put the tiny baby in herapron and pinned it up. She had warmed some sand, and poured in a sack,which she placed beside the baby. She said by this, the baby would staywarm on one side against her belly and the sand would keep it warm on theother side. Emma fed the baby milk with a medicine dropper. She carried the babyall day for two months. At night she pinned the baby to a big pillowbecause it was so small, and she was afraid of turning over on it. Shehad raised ten children. When the park took over Emma was getting too old to care for thegrandchildren. The Messers were moving to Lenoir in Caldwell Co.. heytook the three granddaughters with them. When Will Messer divided the 1200 acres of land between his eightliving children he set aside the nineth portion to Loretta's threechildren.
