Mack Hannah of Cataloochee also one of the first settlers there saidthat Tom Barnes and Tobe Phillips were the best hunters of their day and,Maston Hall was a blacksmith. He made the bear traps to get his third ofthe meat. There ia a bear trap around that Maston Hall made. He alsostated earlier," It is believed that Tobe Phillips place on Tobe's Creekin Cocke Co., TN was the storage place for these hunting trips, and theother families mentioned would come there to get their share." Thishappened between 1840 and 1850. Maston on census 1850 & 1860 in Crabtree section of Haywood Co., NCand 1870 in the Fine's Creek section of Haywood Co., NC. In 1880Charleston Township, Swain Co., NC. Juda is living there with herchildren Henry, Martha C. & Jackson it shows her as a widow. Maston is living 2 houses from George & Nancy Leatherwood Nelson in1860. The Nelson's are related somehow to the McGee family through theDuncan Family. Maston lives beside Phidelia McGee and Jesse McGee in1860. the Duncan family is from Frost Bottom, TN. I have found a family compiled by Mr. Hutchinson in the Old BuncombeCounty Genealogy Society in Ashville, NC that indicated George & BettyCowan Hall as his Parrents. Mr. Hutchinson did not include anydocumentation to back up his findings. After careful research I havefound Maston living in Greenville County, SC in 1840 with his wife and 2girls. Also there is a William Hall in Greenville Co., SC in 1820 with aboy Maston's age living in home. I find several marriages within theMaston Hall line and William Hall of Cocke Co., TN, which indicates avery close tie between the families in addition to the fact that personalaccount of Maston living close to Cocke Co., TN between 1841-1849. AlsoWilliam Hall's son Samuel was born in Buncombe Co., on Mud Creek, butnone of his other children, which indicates that William Hall and GeorgeHall could have been brothers which I had thought originally. In a book called Mt. Sterling and its people, written about thepeople just west of Cataloochee, NC. In the book it said a couple ofnieghbor's of Maston's had came from Wilks Co., NC so I looked over inWilkes for a possible connection and this is what I found. Maston's wife Juda Beach was the daughter of Abraham Beach, he is inWilkes Co., 1810, 1820 & 1830, but no where in 1840. In 1840 Juda'smother is living with her other daughter in Haywood Co.. This meansAbraham died. If Maston was born in SC 1813 how did he meet Juda inWilkes Co. around 1830? Maston's father Merry married a woman, I believeis Native American, around Greenville, SC some time around the revolutionperiod and they raised their family there. Merry died in Greenville 1827,Maston still to young to make it on his own went back to family in wilkesCo., where the marry's Juda and then moves back to Greenville with hisAunt Judieh Hall widow of Thomas D. Hall. Judieh is living beside ofMaston on the 1840 Greenville Co., SC census. Now this is where it getsinteresting. Maston's father Merry had several brothers, two of which areSamuel & David. Samuel moved from Wilkes Co. to Wartburg, Morgan Co., TNand David moved from wilkes Co. to Clinton, Anderson Co., TN. Wartburgand Clinton are only ten miles apart. Maston's caughter Martha marriedthe Eslinger and moved to Anderson Co., in the 1880's also. Now Maston'sgrandmother is Million Webb and her sister married Lt. Col. ThomasDillard and they settlled in Erwin, Unicoi Co., TN, where they have adaughter Mary Ann and she married Col. Robert Love. Col. Robert Love wasgood freinds with President Andrew Jackson before he was President, whenhe was stealing the Indians land and killing them off. Col. Robert Lovewas given 375,000 acres of land in the Smokey Mountians that includedWaynesville, NC and Cataloochee. Why? Because Governer Blount with theIndian removel, The Trail of Tears. Now why did Maston move fromGreenville, SC to Haywood Co., NC? Because his first cousin owned theplace and may have promised family land only to arrive and be heartbroken but stayed on anyway because he had other family in the area.Think about this, if Maston's mother Mary was Cherokee or Chickasaw, Col.Robert Love may have shunned him if he had dark skin. We are also bymarriage with the Dillard family related to the Bryson family, the familyBryson City, NC is named after. -- Tina
