Notes for Bartholomew Dupuy: He was of a lofty stature; he had a deep voice, an eagle eye and was ofhaughty bearing. He wore a sword buckled around his belt. He was calledCount Dupuy and was born about 1660 in Upper Lanquedoc, France. He was avery strong Protestant. Bartholemew Dupuy was born in 1652/53 in the province of Languedoc,France (a stronghold of Huguenot Protestantism) and died in 1743,Goochland Co., VA. He was heir to the title of Count. He enlisted in the French army at age18 and became Captain of the household guards of King Louis XIV. In 1664he retired, bought an old chateau and vineyard at Velours, and in early1685 marrried Susanna Lavillon. At the time (1685) of the Revocation ofthe Edict of Nantes (which granted religious toleration to Protestants),they escaped on horseback into Germany, using his sword and the King'sseal in a desperate flight across France. After 14 years in Germany (orHolland), they went to England in 1699, accepting King William's offer offree transporation and land in the Colony of Virginia. They arrived in1700 at King William Parish on the south side of the James about 16 mileswest of Richmond. Called the "old Hugenot," he was the Huguenot patriarchof the Dupuy family in America. RAPHAEL DuPUY ("Podio" in Latin) "grand Chabellan de 1'empire"followed him. He was one of the Governors which that Emperor appointedover his new possessions, after which, the descendants of RAPHAEL DuPUYbecame possessed of many estates in Languedoc and Dauphine.The Tomb ofRAPHAEL DuPUY was opened in 1610 by order of M.Le Compte de la Roche,"Gouveneur de Romans en Dauphine". The corpse was found extended pon amarble table, his spurs upon one side, his sword upon the other, and uponhis head a helmet of lead containing the following inscription upon acopper plate: RAPHAEL de PODIO, General de la Cavalerie Romaine et GrandChambellan de 1'Empire Romaine". It is said that the "House of DuPUY enDauphine" possesses a gold medal granted to this RAPHAEL DuPUY, upon oneside of which is written: "RAPHAEL de PODIO, grand Chambellan de 1'EmpireRomaine Sons 1'Empereur, Auguste, Christ regnant en chair". RAPHAEL was succeeded by his son, II. HUGUES DuPUY, 1st, Seigneur de Pereins, d'Apifer & de Rocheport. Hewent to the Crusades with three of his children and his wife, Deurard dePoisseu, in 1096. He founded the Abbey d'Aiguebelle, Order of Saint Bernard, was one of theGenerals of "Godofroi de Bouillon", and for bravery was granted the"Souverainete la ville d'Acres". Ancient writers call him HUGUES dePODIO, "tres excellent guerrier". He left four sons: 1. ALLEMAN (whofollows); 2. RODOLPHE, to whom Godefroi de Bouillon gave many "lands onthe other side of the river Jordan", and who was killed "au combat de lavalles de Ran"; 3. ROMAINE, who died in the principalities which Godfroihad given him; and 4. RAYMOND, Second Rector or Grandmaser of the Orderof St. John de Jerusalem. III. ALLEMAN DuPUY, 1st, Chevalier (i.e. aFrench Knight), was a man of valor like his brothers, and was in battleon many occasions in 1115. He left two sons, GUILLAUME, who founded thehouse of DuPUY en Berri, and --- IV. HUGUES DuPUY, 2nd, Chevalier, Seigneur de Pereins, Rochefort, Apiferand Montbrun. He went to the Crusades in 1140 with Aine III, Comte deSavoye, and "acquit beau-coup de gloire en 1147", in the army of theEmperor Conrad III. He espoused Floride Moiran and left issue: V. ALLEMANDuPUY, 2nd, Chevalier, Seigneur de Pereins, etc. He also bore the name DeMontbrun, and rendered homage in 1229 to Aimar de Poitiers. He marriedAlix, Princess Dauphine, and left issue --- VI. ALLEMAN DuPUY, 3rd, Chevalier and Lord of Pereins, Rochefort, Apifer,Montbrun, Rhelianete, Baux, Solignac, Bruis, Bordeaux, Ansenix andConissieu. He married Beatrix Artod, and had: 1. ALLEMAN, IV, (whofollows); 2. BASTAT, Archbishop of Boulogne, founder of the branch DuPUY,Seigneurs de Montbrun; Joubert Cardinal of Bologne. VII. ALLEMAN DuPUY, IV, Chevalier, &c, followed Phillipe V into Flandersin 1329. He married Eleamore, daughter of Jean Alleman,Saigneur deLancoil, by whom he had --- VIII. ALLEMAN DuPUY, V, Chevalier de Pereins, &c. He married Ainarde deRoland, who was a widow in 1362 (etoit venue 1362), by whom he had a son--- IX. GILLES DuPUY,Chevalier, Saigneur de Pereins, &c. He rendered homageto Charles de France in 1349, and died in 1390. He married Alix deBellecombe, and had issue: 1. GILLES; 2. ARTOIT; 3. AINIER; 4. GUILLAUME;5. ALLEMAN; 6. FRANCOIS, Chevalier of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem.He was succeeced by his son --- X. JEAN DuPUY, founder of the Protestant family of Cabrielles, upperLanguedoc; died 1583, leaving two sons: 1. Blond hair and small - was said to be very beautiful. She dressed as a page in order to escape from France with her husband whowas being hunted by a spy of the King's. She had tucked a Bible in herblouse and when he shot her, the bullet only penetrated the Bible, savingher life. This book has been passed down through the family to thepresent day. A county history on King William Parish, Virginia states that this is themost romantic story in their county of colonial days. There is a book on Bartholomew that tells this story, which was writtenby family members for a newspaper years ago.
