Stevens - Stephens Genealogy and Family History Page 105 CHAPTER IX THE 14) THOMAS4 STEVENS LINE So far as this writer knows, very little of this 14) Thomas line has beentraced, and little more than the names of the children published, fromapparently hundreds of descendants. Savage says that this Thomas Stevenscame to America with his brothers Cyprian and Richard, and their "fatherThomas was, perhaps, the armorer of Buttolph Lane" (or king's armourer).Notice he says "perhaps", but many seem to have copied that leaving outthe "perhaps" which amounts to saying that it was certain and doubtlessmany will continue for years, to copy this error. M. L. Holman in herStevens-MillerGenealogy, 1947, et al. say that it is wrong and Charles D.Stevens quotes an affidavit made at Whitehall (in London) in 1629 showingthat said Thomas was deceased at that time and had probably died sometime before that date. So he could not have been the father of saidbrothers: Thos. "the ironmonger" etc. 14) Thomas4 Stevens (or Steevens) (Thomas3, 2, Anthony1), c. 1644-1704,born in England, im. to Mass. Colony ca. 1660; -m- before 1661 Mary Greenof Charleston and perhaps lived there a while. They were at Sudberry in1665, Stowe, Mass. in 1688 and Plainfield, Conn. in 1689. Then in 1702 heand his son Thomas Jr. were at Plainfield "west of the Quienbog". Their children as given in his will were: 1. 60) Mary5 Stevens, b. ca. 1661 2. 61) Anne5 b. ca. 1663 *3. 62) Thomas, Jr.5, b. 1665 in Sudbury, Mass., -m- Ruth Hall. 4. 63) John5, b. 1667, probably at Sudbury. 5. 64) Cyprian5 b. 1670 at Sudbury -m- Abigail Warren in 1729 atPlainfield, Ct. according to the late J. W. Lester, des. 6. 65) Jacob5, b. 1673/4 62) Thomas5 Stevens, Jr. (Thos.4) b. ca. 1665 -m- Ruth Hall, b. 1670,lived at Sudbury and Plainfield, Conn. -(Plowden Stevens); is said tohave had a son 966) John, b. ca 1695 -m- Elizabeth How.-(Media ResearchBureau, giving the line of Casmir Pulaski Stevens; Vircus) A Jacob is listed at Grafton about 1750, probably related, so apparentlythis 966) John6, perhaps with Uncle 65) Jacob and family, moved west fromSudbury, Mass. about 20 miles or so to the Worcester District, as thegeneral movement was west, and was the father of 967) Thomas7 Stevens, b.ca 1730, who -m- on Mar. 24, 1753 Martha Rogers of Holden, Mass. (formedfrom North Worcester in 1741)-(Early Mass. Marriages, ed. by Bailey, Bk.I, p. 62). Also with him in the same small community was 968) CyprianStevens, b. ca 1744 -m- Mar. 2, 1769 Sarah Prince.-(Ibid. p. 10). Cyprianis another trace name. I do not find it in the Stevens names in thegenealogies of other Stevens families or in the U. S. Census of 1790 forR. I., N. C., S. C. etc. Therefore it appears 967) Thomas7 and 968) Cyprian were probably brothersand surely descendants of 14) Thomas, since they were not in the firstfour generations from 15) Cyprian, which are rather well proved, and sowe may list them as descendants of 14) Thomas. The said son of 966) John6is less certain, but if it should be found later that we have ??mistakenhim for one of his cousins, it's all in the family anyway and should onlymake a difference in one or two generations. A History of Framington, Massachusetts THOMAS, STEPHENS of Charlestown, iron-monger and blacksmith, had a grantfrom Sud., Mar. 2, 1662, he to do the smithwork for the town. In 1664, hewas offered land "for his encouragement to keep a free school." He wasalso town clerk for several years. By w. Mary, he had: 1. Anne, b. Mar. 20, 1664; 2.Thomas, b. Ap. 14, '65, of Plainfield; 3.John, b. Ap. 23, '67, m. Abigail Walker, 1714, also of Plainfield; 4.Jacob, b. Mar. 1, '74, d. in Stow, 1754; 5.Cyprian, b. Ap. 19, '70. In 1681, Thomas sold to his brother, John Greene, his house, land, &c., in Sud.,and moved to Pompasiticut, (Stow,) where he is noticed as proprietor thesame year. His son Thomas was prop. at Stow, 1684. Stephens/Stevens from North East Settlers by Savage, Vol. 4.Massachusetts. Thomas Stevens of Sudbury, may be the youth in the "Abigail", fromLondon, 1635, aged 12, perhaps son of Thomas of London, the armorer, mayhave gone home and come again, with Cyprian, and was a freeman 1665. Wasthe town clerk for 15 years. Barry thinks he was first at Charlestown, ablacksmith, and late in life lived at Stow, but at Sudbury had beenoffered land to keep a school. By wife Mary had: 1. Ann b. 20 Mar 1664 2. Thomas b. 14 Apr 1665 3. John b. 23 Apr 1667 4. Cyprian b. 19 Apr 1670 5. Jacob b. 1 Mar 1674 -----William Lackey Stephens;http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/William-Lackey--Stephens/index.html
