He served in the French and Indian Wars two weeks in the Company of Capt.Uriah Stevens, Colonel Ebenezer Marsh, at the relief of Fort WilliamHenry, New York, August 1757. He was in the Revolutionary War at thetaking of Fort Ticonderoga, Commander at Fort George, May 25, 1775, andwas appointed Captain in the Continetal Army January 19, 1776. Capt.Stevens raised a Company and marched with it to Canada, under ColonelCharles Burrall. He was taken prisoner at the Cedars, May 19, 1776, heldas hostage by the British and exchanged February 11, 1782. He died in Washington, Berkshire County, Massachusetss, November 20,1801. His widow died at the residence of her son-in-law, Jared Patchen,in Skaneateles, New York, in 1811. There were many children, and out of the ten daughters, the followingfour appeared in the Canaan Records: Martha Esther Phebe Dorothy Lucy, the ninth daughter, married Robert Leonard Oct. 15, 1795. *The above information was obtained from the "Stephens/Stevens Genealogy"by Plowdon Stevens (1909). STEVENS FAMILY-Genealogy John, son of Andrew and Esther Safford Stevens, married Phebe How. He wasa captain in the Revolutionary Army, raised a company in his own town, was taken captive at the Cedars in Lower Canada, and held as a hostagethree years. He was an intimate friend and companion of Ethan Allen. Hedied in Washington, Berkshire Co. 27 "To the Descendants of Thomas Dickinson Son of Nathaniel and Anna GullDickinson" John Stevens, son of Andrew and Esther Safford Stevens, at the age ofsixteen, enlisted in the French war under General Noah Amherst. Onaccount of his experience, he early took an active part in the war of theRevolution. He in company with Ethan Allen and others, conceived andexecuted the plan of taking Ticonderoga. Ramsey's History of theRevolution says, `Messrs. Dean, Wooster, Parsons, Stevens and others fromConnecticut, planned a scheme for obtaining possession of this importantpost.'He afterwards received a Captain's Commission, raised a largecompany, mostly in his own town, marched to the Cedars on the St.Lawrence River, where his company was placed under command of GeneralButterfield. They were attacked by a large force of British and Indians,to whom General Butterfield surrendered eight companies. CaptainsStevens, Sullivan, Green and Bliss were held as hostages for nearly threeyears, when the officers and men were stripped almost naked and turnedout to be sent home in the month of October. I have a portion of a diarykept by Benjamin Stevens, who was a cousin of John's and in his company.Their sufferings were incredible. At the commencement of the war JohnStevens was a thrifty farmer; at its close he was penniless, with a wifeand ten children (all daughters) to support. ------William Lackey Stephens;http://familytreemaker.genealogy.com/users/s/t/e/William-Lackey--Stephens/index.html
