Lyle Eugene Hill, Jr., resident of Medford, OR, passed into eternity on February 5, 2019. Lyle peacefully left this world surrounded by loving family. Lyle was born in Pittsburgh, PA on February 26, 1929 and was quickly nicknamed "Sunny" as he was the sunshine of his mother's life. Lyle attended West Coast University where he earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering. After college, Lyle joined the United States Air Force in 1950 where he became a Staff Sergeant before being honorably discharged in 1954. Lyle served his country during the Korean War.
Lyle married his devoted wife Brenda in 1960 and they remained married until his death. The couple had two sons, Gene and Doug, who survive him.
After his military service, Lyle began working in the aeronautic industry eventually working for North American Rockwell where he worked on the Apollo 11 mission. Having built missile guidance systems and flight simulators in the Air Force, Lyle created a command module simulator for the astronauts who were easily bored with meetings and preferred to skip out to practice maneuvering the command module in space. Lyle also worked on the design of the Apollo 11 service module.
As the space program began winding down, Lyle sought out new opportunities. He decided owning a McDonald's franchise could be a great new change and challenge. For four years, Lyle worked nights at a local McDonald's restaurant while keeping his aeronautic career during the day. In 1972, Lyle and Brenda moved their children from Los Angeles, CA to Medford, OR to open the city's first McDonald's restaurant located on Barnett Road. Lyle had a long and successful career as a McDonald's owner/operator until his retirement in 2000.
Lyle will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his sense of humor, his generosity, and how much he cared about his family, friends, and employees.
By Lyle's request, there will be no service.
