July 26, 1950 ~ Jan. 31, 2010

Longtime Anchorage resident Geoffrey Feiler, 59, died Sunday night, Jan. 31, 2010, surrounded by his family and loved ones. A celebration of life will be from 6-9 p.m. Saturday night at the MTS Gallery in Mountain View. His family would appreciate sharing stories about Geoff. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite environmental organization.

A pioneer in the weatherization field, Mr. Feiler was a founder of Heat Loss Analysis and the Energy Store; founder of the Alaska Craftsman Home Program, Rural Energy Enterprises, and the Alaska Building Science Network and a former board member of the Blood Bank of Alaska. He was the first energy rater in Alaska and the first one to use modern technology in identifying home and business energy issues. He was devoted to green energy practices right down to recycling at home.

Geoff was born July 26, 1950, in New Jersey, and liked to joke that he and Mick Jagger shared a birthday. He lived all ove kmr the world with his Air Force family and particularly enjoyed the time they spent in France. Geoff liked to tell stories about the return voyage to America on the S.S. United States on which Salvador Dali was also a passenger.

Geoff moved to Tennessee with his family where he entered sophomore year in high school. Despite the challenges of being a teenager in a closed Southern society, he made friends quickly and they remain his loyal friends even today. During high school, he worked at the local Burger Chef where he honed his onion and grease skills, and would always go for triple servings of fudge pie in the school cafeteria. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and joined the National Guard where he helped with clean-up and rescue efforts in Mississippi after Hurricane Camille.

He followed his family to Alaska in 1971 and loved it so much he stayed after they were transferred out. He was involved in the Ad Hoc Organizing Committee of Young Democrats and learned about concert promotion fundraising techniques.

Geoff was a partner in Goodtimes Productions, which brought up musicians such as Steve Goodman, Hoyt Axton, Taj Mahal, John Prine, and It's a Beautiful Day, among others. Geoff developed a passion for scuba diving and it was always his dream to own a sailboat and sail around the world. However, he was content sailing his Islander 36, the "Zoe," around Resurrection Bay. He was the treasurer of the William H. Seward Yacht Club.

He was a loving and generous brother, son and father. Geoff loved to play jokes even as an adult, giving his brothers girls' names just to tease them. He called his daughter "Murgatroyd." He and his brothers would have contests on who could lose the most weight and he would often sign cards, "the skinny brother."

Geoff is survived by his beloved daughter, Zoe Durner-Feiler; mother and stepfather, Judy and Dale Holmes; brother and sister-in-law, Phil and Louise Feiler; eight nephews; and a large extended community of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his brothers, James and Barry; and adoptive father, David Feiler.
