JOANN LENNON DURNER HOYT Jessie JoAnn Lennon Durner Hoyt, age 76, of Wilmington, NC, passed away peacefully on December 12th, surrounded by her loving family who had been by her side after an extended bout with metastatic breast cancer. Born in Conway, SC, to the late Lila and Clyde Lennon on February 4, 1939, she was preceded in death by the loving father of her children, John Augustus Durner, III, and a beloved sister, Connie Lennon Monroe. Her family moved to Wilmington when JoAnn was two years old, where she grew up in the public schools and graduated from New Hanover High School class of 1956. She attended Woman's College at Greensboro (now UNC Greensboro). After college JoAnn married John Durner, III and moved to Burgaw, NC to begin her life and family there. Her father-in-law started Pender Motor Sales (which later became Fairway Ford) and her husband worked there with his father. JoAnn was active in her community and church, served as the first woman president of the Buccaneer Country Club for two years, and was involved in all the sports activities of her children who were all-star players in their chosen fields. Her husband passed away at age 41, leaving JoAnn to raise their three children with family and friends. She gave her children a warm heart and comforting assurance in their ability to meet any challenge sent their way, as well as strong discipline. Their home was the "HUB" of all gatherings! JoAnn worked for Four County Electric Membership Corporation in Burgaw, NC, for 25 years, retiring as Manager of Administrative Services. She had a deep faith which was expressed each day in her daily living. She loved her family and friends, and they spent many times gathering for food, each trying to see who was the "best cook". Birthdays were always important and celebrated. After her children were grown she married John Keais Hoyt, Jr. from Kinston, NC, whom she knew before his first wife passed away. John and JoAnn were married for 23 years. They spent a brief few years in Kinston before retiring to her beloved Wilmington in 1999. They enjoyed the ocean and activities at the Carolina Yacht Club, especially rocking together on the porches while they took in the scenic view. The couple's home church was St. John's Episcopal Church where they spent many hours together working with outreach programs, particularly Unseen Guest (a love for over 25 years), and Mother Hubbard's Cupboard. They had a wonderful, supportive church family, and Vacation Bible School was always a favorite with all eight grandchildren. JoAnn enjoyed several cruises, inside and outside music venues, and good food. She was a member of the Cape Fear Garden Club. Flowers everywhere always - and friends, friends! Her dogs always at her side...children and grandchildren...fun and "lots of laughter". In-laws as wonderful as true bloods: Stephanie and special sister-in-law Carolyn. I love you "to the moon and back." JoAnn is survived by her devoted husband, John K. Hoyt, Jr. of the home, a son, John A. Durner, IV (Jay), the love of her life, and loving daughters Leslie Lennon Piepmeyer and Laurie Durner Howell, all of Wilmington, NC. In-laws: Stephanie Boyd Durner, John A. Piepmeyer, and Chris Howell. Grandchildren: Lindsey Piepmeyer, Hailey Piepmeyer, Gus Piepmeyer, Gracie Piepmeyer, Meghan Howell, Joseph Howell, John A. Durner V, and Sydney Durner. Four nieces, a nephew, and cousins. Step-children: Keais Hoyt and Lisa Hoyt, Janice Hoyt Hill and Alan Hill (all of Winterville, NC), and Julia Hoyt Leatherwood and Scott Leatherwood (of Kinston, NC). Step-grandchildren: Tanner Hoyt (Brittany), Evan Hoyt, Jana Hill, Ashlyn Hill, Brady Hill, Dylan Leatherwood. Services will be held Wednesday, December 16th at 2pm at St. John's Episcopal Church, 1219 Forest Hills Drive, Wilmington, NC. A reception and visitation will follow in the fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice of Wilmington, St. John's Episcopal Church, or to a charity of one's choice.Published in the Wilmington Star-News on Dec. 15, 2015
