Miriam Schulze
Former NHS Teacher
Miriam Rice Schulze, 101, of Southbury, formerly of Newtown, died August 20 at her home. She was born in Fairfield, Maine, on November 3, 1905, a daughter of Edward and Edna (Owen) Rice. She had lived in Southbury since 1990.
For 49 years, from 1941 to 1990, Mrs Schulze was the wife of the late Christian R. Schulze. Mrs Schulze was an active member of Newtown Congregational Church for 53 years.
Mrs Schulze was a graduate of Colby College in Waterville, Me., and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She studied in France in 1927 to learn French. Mrs Schulze taught high school French in Auburn, Me., and Danbury, and then from 1954 until 1970, at Newtown High School.
She volunteered at Fairfield Hills Hospital in the 1970s and 1980s. For many years, Mrs Schulze was a cellist in Danbury Symphony Orchestra.
Mrs Schulze is survived by her son, Lawrence D. Schulze of Southbury; two grandchildren, David M. Schulze of Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Margo Schulze-Haugen of Dunnloring, Va.; four step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will held at 2 pm on Saturday, September 8, at Newtown Congregational Church. There are no calling hours.

Arrangements are in care of Honan Funeral Home, Newtown.
