1 Details: Beatrice S “Betty” Becker 88 9244 29th St died at St Joseph Home for the Aged on Thursday (Sept 3 1998) Born Oct 20 1909 in Kenosha she was the daughter of the late Ferdinand L and Anna C (Jepsen) Schmelling She graduated from Mary D Bradford High School and Milwaukee Teachers College On June 27 1936 she married George Becker in Kenosha He died on Feb 17 1998 She was one of the first teachers of the hearing-impaired in Kenosha and taught until she married She assisted her husband in the operation of Becker Awning and Shade Co from 1936 until they retired in 1973 She was a member of First ! United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday school Jbb’s Daughters the Order of the East- era Star Kenosha Gem and Mineral Society Good Sam Campers Dusty Road Runners Club several square dance clubs and the Lake Shangri-La Beach Association She was a charter member of the first troop of the Kenosha Girl Scouts in 1922 She was a member of the Girl Scouts Circle of Pearls founded the first Girl Scout Mariner Troop in 1931 earned the Girl Scout Silver Stripe in 1936 received the “Thanks” Badge in 1968 and had a totem pole dedicated in her honor at the Girl Scout Camp in 1997 With her husband she enjoyed extensive world-wide travel rock hunting trips to the western United States and trips to their cottage on Lake Shangri-La She also enjoyed gardening and fishing trips to Canada She is survived by two sons Robert F of Kenosha and George P of Des Plaines ILL a daughter Betty Ann Banner of Manhattan Kan seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren She was preceded in death by a daughter Gretchen Becker and three brothers Theodore Gordon and David Schmelling Hansen Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements CLIPPED FROM Kenosha News Kenosha, Wisconsin 04 Sep 1998, Fri • Page 13
