Notes from the obituary in the Waupun Leader newspaper. (about 3/31/1927).
Mrs. Margaret Boland, aged 89 years, 2 months, 9 days, died Wednesday evening, March 30, at the home of her niece, Mrs. Anna Grebel, after a lingering illness.
Margaret Barthmann was born in Germany Jan. 21, 1838 and came to this country at the age of 10 years. In 1859 she was married to Henry Boland at Sparta, WI. The following year they came to Waupun where she spent the remainder of her life. In 1892 her husband died and from then on she lived with her niece, Mrs. Anna Grebel.
Auntie Boland, as she was familiarly called, was a patient suffered in her long illness and was loved and respected by all who knew her and there aremany who will mourn her death.
Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock on Saturday from the home of Mrs. Grebel with the Rev. Wm. E. Staeling officiating. The pall bearerswill be Arthur Davison, William De Vos, Edward Mason, Richard Abhold, Otto Lother, and Louis Krueger.
Relatives and friends from out-of-town who attended the funeralof Mrs. Margaret Boland were Theodore Reul, Mrs. Henry Reul and son,Andrus, of Helenville; Mr. John Rauber of Jefferson; Mrs. Melinda Remy of Milwaukee; Mrs. Frank Stoiber of Tomah; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Grebel and son, Grant, of Randolph; Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grebel of Beaver Dam; Mrs. Ed Klas of Beaver Dam; and Miss Anna Heideman of Milwaukee.
A grand niece of Auntie Boland (Mrs. Franses(Grebel) Swantz) wrote the following about a quilt now owned by John Swantz.
History of Antique Quilt
It was made during the time of the Civil War - 1865
Three ladyfriends of Auntie Boland pieced it and worked on it continuously for three months. One of the three was the warden's wife and it was made entirely in her quarters at the prison. ( In Waupun ) You will note that it is now passed 100 years of age.
