DEPOSITION OF JOSIAH BOYER at LUCY BOYER'S WIDOW'S PENSI ON HEARING

November 12, 1889

I am 56 years old, a farmer, and my Post Office address is Hobbie, Lu zerne Co.,Penna.

Yes, Sir, I was in the U.S. Military Service during the late war,I e nlisted in Co. F. 147th Penna., Vols., here in Hobbie, we went off on Aug ust 11, 1862, and I served in that organization until the War was over, a nd it was June, 1865, that we were mustered out, No, Sir, I never was in a ny other Co. No, Sir, not a pensioner, and never applied.

The claimant, Lucy A. Boyer, deceased husband John BOYER was a broth er of mine, and he served in thesame Regt. but not the same Co., that I d id, he was in the next Co. H his Co. and our Co. were always together, I e nlisted I think 4 weeks and he wanted to come, and I came home and fetch ed him, heenlisted at Harrisburg.

Before I enlisted I lived at Hobbie, and he lived over at Ebert Hil l, when he enlisted, we were quite young when we left home, we were nev er put out, he was homelonger than I was, I used to see him on up until h is enlistment, sometimes a couple of months apart, and sometimes a litt le oftener.

He was all sound when he enlisted so far as I know, hedid not compla in at all, He did not complain and never was sick any that I know of unt il he went to the Army. He did not have any wound or injury on his wri st or hand before enlistment, he got a wound out there one night, out at t he skirmish line, I do not know how it happened, No Sir, he did not have a ny wound or injury to his leg before his enlistment, he was all right befo re he went in.

He got wounded one night on the skirmish line, on his hand here, it w as all bloody the next morning, that is all I know, I saw his hand the ne xt morning, it was cut here, and he had a doctor that tied it up, the Reg t. or Co. doctor, I forgot what place it was anymore, it is so long, we we re on the road going to Atlanta, No, Sir, I am not mistaken in the ti me or place, it was on theroad going to Atlanta, I know that it was aft er the battle of Lookout Mountain, we were on the road to Atlanta, a nd it was one night that he was on the skirmish line, and someone to ld me that he got hurt and I saw the doctor tie it up for him the next mor ning, we were taken in the morning, they put other pickets out, and we coo ked our coffee at that place where they tied up his hand, he didnot kn ow how it happened, he said something struck it, the balls were flying eve rywhere, I do not know the names of the doctors.

No, Sir, the _______ was not sounded only once, Yes, Sir,I was wi th the Co. at the battle of Peach Tree Creek, I guess it was the same yea r, it was on the way going to Atlanta, it was not much of a fight, there w as a little skirmish there, I think thatwas after he was wounded in the h and, I am not sure though, I do not know whether my brother got any wou nd at Peach Tree Creek___ as I know of he was not wounded in the ankle the re, or at other time or place in the service, he might but he never to ld me about it, sometimes I would not see him for a couple of days.

Aside from the wounds, he complained of the Rheumatism, he complain ed that his legs and arms hurt him so, that it would draw around from o ne place to the other, and that he was so stiff that he could hardly wa lk and sometimes he would ride in the ambulance, laying out in the winte r, cold and rain caused the Rheumatism, I first knew him to complain of t he Rheumatism after the Chancellorsville fight, we laid there in the wood s, and it rained there for 4 or 5 days and we had to stand right out in t he open rain, and he complained more right after the Gettysburg fight, sa id he did not think that he could stand it to go so far, we got orde rs to go down to Tennessee in March, and he still got worse along, every m onth so that it would draw worse and last longer, sometimes he would be o ff duty for a day or so at a time, so near as I know, I do not know that he had any medical treatment for the Rheumatism, or what he did for it.

Yes, Sir, I was with the Co. at Bridgeport, Ala., a part of the tim e, he was there I guess 3 or 4 weeks before Igot there, I was picked o ut to bury at Gettysburg to help bury the men and cannot tell what ti me I got to Bridgeport, I did not know that he had the measles at Bridgepo rt.

I saw him every year after he came home from the Army up to his deat h, sometimes I saw him 5 or 6 times a year, he still got worse along, a nd complained more until he died; he complained of Rheumatism and that h is bones hurt him so, and he complained of his lungs, he was over he re to see Dr. Weiss the last time he was in Hobbie wanted to get some medi cine; he said he had such pain in his heart in here.

I was over just a few days before he died, he was up around yet, b ut said that he felt awful bad.
