DANIEL LEISCHNER

Daniel Leischner was born on September 20, 1858, in Kulm, Bessarabia, South Russia. He was the oldest son of Johann and Katherine (Damki) Leischner. Daniel had one brother David, who died in 1877, at the age of seventeen. he also had nine half brothers and sisters that I know of: John, Gottfried, Gustav, Karoline (Mrs. Daniel Boettcher) Lydia (Mrs. Simon Tiede),Sophia (Mrs. William Isaak), Saloma (Mrs. Joseph Mogck), Helena ( Mrs. Johann Schimke) and Emelia (Mrs. Emanuel Sievert).

Supposedly Daniel had one step-brother, Karl Lobe, but there is no proof of this.

At the age of twenty, Daniel came to the United States with his father, step-mother and many other relatives. They sailed from Bremen via Southampton to New York on the vessel "SS Mosel". It was February or March of 1878, when they left Bremen. The ship arrived at the port of New York on April 13, 1878. The Leischners went through immigration at "Castle Gardens". The immigration laws were rather lax at that time and all they had to do was give their name, age and what they did for a living. Daniel said that he was a farmer. It is believed that Daniel came by trainto Dakota Territory. This trip took about ten to fifteen days. From the information I have gathered there were relatives in Dakota Territory already. Until he was old enough to homestead, Daniel lived with his father, Johann and step-mother, Justina. He is listed on the 1880 as living with them.

Daniel was twenty-one years of age when he decided to become a homesteader. In order todo this, Daniel had to become a citizen of these United States or he had to have filed his declaration of intention to become one. he had to swear never to bare arms against the United States nor give aid to any of it's enemies. Daniel would then be allowed to file on 160 acres of land in certain specified areas, or on 80 acres of more favorable localities. A fee of $18.00 of which $14.00 hadto be paid at the time of filing on the land and balance would be paid when he had proven up on the land. Daniel had to live on the land and start improving it within six months after the date of filing, plow ten acres into crops and establish a home there. He had to live on this land for a period of five years. Then the final papers could be obtained but not later then seven and a half yearsafter the filing date.

Though Daniel had his homestead papers he was still living with his father and step-mother. He is listed as living with them on the 1880 census. I am thinking thathe built his home when he married his wife, Maria Kroll.

Daniel fulfilled all of these duties by obtaining his intention to become a citizen on February 28, 1879, not quiet one year after he arrived. This was done at Milltown, the county seat of Armstrong County. Armstrong County was not in existence very long. In 1880, Hutchinson County took it over. Daniel obtained his citizenshippapers on June 3, 1887, at the county seat of Olivet in Hutchinson County. It was eight years after he declared his intention to become one. Mr. David Kisk and Mr. John M. Billon were his witnesses. The final homestead papers were filed on the 23 day of May 1890.

On April 10, 1881, Daniel Leischner married Maria Kroll, the oldest daughter of August Kroll. They were baptized and married by Rev. Reichle. He must have been a Baptist missionary in the 1880's. When the Dry Creek Baptist Church was started Daniel and Maria were Charter members along with their parents: Mr. and Mrs.Johann Leischner and Mr. and Mrs. August Kroll.

Parkston Advance Paper: August 25, 1892

In the early 1900's Daniel and Maria moved from the family homestead to the town of Parkston, S.D. They resided on the corner of Maple and Third Street. Mrs. Leischner passed away on November 2, 1925, at the age of 62. She died after a lingering illnesscalled "Brights Disease". She was buried in the cemetery south of town.

Daniel remarried on September 30, 1926, to Mrs. Jacob (Pauline) Bujer of Tripp, S.D. She had seven children by herfirst husband.

DANIEL LEISCHNER PASSES AWAY MONDAY MORNING
