Kenneth Carl Scholz, 92, Spearfish, passed away Sunday August 3, 2013 at his home. He was born in Appleton City, MO on April 23, 1921 to Henry and Clara Scholz.
He graduated from Colorado State University in forestry and began working for the US Forest Service in Pingree Park outside of Ft. Collins, Colorado. His career took him to many locations in the western part of the United States. He had a rangerdistrict 48 miles outside of Cody, Wyoming, then to Buffalo, Wyoming, Idaho Springs, Colorado, Custer, South Dakota where he was the Fire Control Officer for the Deadwood fire in 1959, then on to the Denver office. He was also the Supervisor ofthe White River National Forest in Glenwood Springs, Colorado.
He returned to Custer as the Supervisor of the Black Hills National Forest. He went to Washington, DC for several years before going to Billings, Montana.
He was happily married to Phyllis (McFarland) Scholz for 66 years. They retired in Silver City, New Mexico and lived there for 25 years. In 2007, they moved to Spearfish. Ken loved nature and family. He had a scientific mind that was always seeking new knowledge and a great sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his wife Phyllis, brother, Robert Scholz and sister, Helen Camilleri. Grateful to have share his remarkable life are his three children, Bob Scholz (Cindy Totton), Markie Scholz (Dick Termes) and Claire Scholz; five grandchildren, Matthew (Jeanna) Scholz, Lang Termes, Bonny Fleming, Dylan Fleming, and Kabe Termes; two great-grandchildren, Anna Fleming and Stella Scholz. He will be sorely missed. A family memorial will be held at a later date.
