I was able to find Baptismal records on a Family History Center microfilm showing Matthew baptized as Jonas Joseph on May 23, 1814. His marriage record also gave the name of Johann Joseph. His baptismal and marriage records were found in the St.Nikolaus Catholic Church records in Hallschlag, Germany. The witnesses to his wedding were Leonard Perrar from Hallschlag and Nikolaus Klein from Reuland. Matthew and his family were found in the 1855 Census in the town of Ava. At that time he owned 75 acres of land. 25 acres were improved and 50 acres were unimproved. The cash value of the farm was $900. 8 of the acres were plowed. He had harvested 150 bushels of potatoes in the past year. He had 2 cows, 1 horse and 1 pig. He had sold 200 lbs. of butter. The 1855 Census said he had lived here for 12 years. His name in that census was listed as Martin Shrater. In the 1860 Town of Ava Census, he was listed as Martin Schreider. Pge 17. The1865 Lewis County Census says Mathew has been married only once, is a naturalized citizen and owns land. Matthew lived with his daughter, Mary in Deerfield in the 1880 census.
