Edward W. VanAlstine, 87, of Garden City Drive, Mattydale, died Saturday at University Hospital following a short illness. He was a life resident of Mattydale. He was the son of the late Edward A. and Mae VanAlstine and attended North Syracuse schools until he left to join the Navy during WWII. He served aboard the USS Driller in the Atlantic Theater. Following WWII he worked with the railroad for several years and then for the North Syracuse School District for 30 years as a custodian before retiring in 1989. Ed was a communicant of St., Margaret's Church and a member of its socialites group. He was a life member of VFW Post 3146 in Mattydale and a former member of both the Loyal Order of the Moose in Solvay and the American Legion Post 1832 in Mattydale. He loved dancing on Sundays at Castaways with his friends and enjoyed spending time with his family. Ed was predeceased by his first wife and mother of his children, the former Martina Ferrer in 1993; his second wife, the former Mary Melcher in 2002; as well as two sisters, Helen Swan and Eileen Killoran. He is survived by his two daughters, Marge (Howie) Hamlin of Fairmount and Geri VanAlstine of Mattydale, three grandchildren, Darryl, Dustin and Tyler Hamlin; three sisters, Dorothy Spinella of Mattydale, Dolores Walker of Saratoga Springs and Viola Hendricks of Liverpool; and several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Krueger Funeral Home, 2619 Brewerton Rd., Mattydale. Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with a Mass of Christian Burial at noon in St. Margaret's Church. Burial will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens, Dewitt. Contributions may be made to St. Margaret's Roofing Fund, 203 Roxboro Rd., Mattydale, NY 13211 or NAVAC, P.O. Box 215, North Syracuse, NY 13212.
